the Raging Flood,
Chicago, April 5.-A special to the
Chronicle from Carmi, Ills„ yesterday
says: The disaster at Sltatvneetowu, Ills,;
which occurred at six o'clock last even-
ing, caused by the breaking of the Gov-
ernment levee situated one wile above the
town, was very disastrous both as re-
gards loss of life and destruction to prop-
• erty. .e. stream of i ator twelve to twenty
feet deep, carrying half of the current of
the flood -raised Ohio, .descended on the
unsuspecting people.

A Town of 2,000 Iuhubitants.
-85. Louis,: Mo., April 0. -Shawnee -
town, Ills„ has a population of about
3,000 inhabitants, and is situated on the
frost bank of the Ohio River. 'The streets
wore parallel with the river, the principal
business streets being but two blocks dis-
tant from the river. The level of the
river is about 15 foot above the city, and
the levee bank is about 20 feet thick.
Distressing in the Extreme.
Evansville, Ind., April 5. -Mayor
Carnoy of Shawneetown appealed to
Congress for aid yesterday for destitute
people of his stricken city. He says the
town is absolutely destroyed, lines there
is not enough food in town for one meal.
Be says three hundred people were
drowned. AU goods in the city are lost
and the situation is distressing in the ex-
treme. This city sept two steamboat loads
of provisions.
Five FIundred Are Lost.
Ridgeway, Iils., April 5. -The Shaw-
neatown horror grows hourly. It was
estimated yesterday morning by the
Mayor that five hundred lives have been
lost.
Urgent Appeal to the Governor.
Springfield, Ills., April 5. -Governor
Tanner yesterday received rho following
message relative to the Shawueetown
disaster:

Cairo, March 30. -It is officially an-
nounced that the gunboats and Anglo-
Egyptian troops attacked Shondy on Sat-
urday, destroyed the forts, captured
quantities of grain, cattle and ammuni-
tion, and liberated over 600 slaves, most-
ly Jnalins. The Dervishes lost 160 men.
