A Veteran's Voice
Gives Hig-h. Praise to Hood's

Blood Purified—Strength Built up—
Tobacco Habit Cured.
Many a veteran of the war, whose
health was wrecked by wounds, ex-
posure And privation, has found in
Hood's Sarsaparilla just the tonic and
blood reviving effects he needed, The
following is one out of hundreds of
of letters from G. A. R. boys prais-
ing hood's Sarsaparilla for health re-
stored and strength renewed in de-
clining years.
at C. I. Hood & Co., Lowell, Mass.:
"Dear Sirs: On account of the great
benefit Idood's Sarsaparilla has been to
me, I gladly write this, that others simi-
larly afflicted may learn of the success of
the medicine in my case and a positive
cure for them. I had been

since 1864, and had also been a constant
smoker for 35 years. My wife purchased
the first bottle of Hood's Sarsaparilla and
I commenced to take it more to please her
than anything else. One bottle after
another was taken with increasing benefit.
The effect was of a strenghening nature,
toning up my whole system. After I had
been taking the medicine a short time, I
laid away my pipe and have not had any
desire for the use of tobacco since. Hood's
Sarsaparilla has thoroughly purified my
blood and driven all poison out of my
system. It has also done me

physically, and I feel like a new and free
man. Previously, I had tried a good many
different times to stop smoking, and to
regain my health, but I was unable to ac-
complish the former, so that my attempt
for the latter was each time a failure. I
am pleased to recommend Hood's Sarsapa-
rilla as a blood purifier." J.R.MCFADDEN,

SHE WISHES TO BUILD A NEW
NICARAGUAN CANAL.
Negotiating Directly With the Central
American Republics, Regardless of the
United States—Great Britain Suspected
or Being Behind the Scenes.
New York, Sept. 6.—A special to the
Herald from Washington says; Japan,
not content with an interference with
President McK£inley's. Hawaiian annexa-
tion policy, now has designs upon the
Nicaraguan canal. According to semi-
official advices just received here from
Nicaragua tho Japanese Government is
secretly negotiating with the Diet of the
greater republic of Central America,
which recently met in Salvador, for the
construction of the Nicaraguan canal,
independent of and in defiance of the in-
terests and influence of the United States
or other nations. If Japan can encom-
pass it, according to Nicaraguan advices
received hero, she would like to obtain
the abrogation of all treaty rights
possessed by the United States in relation
to inter -oceanic transit and the forfeiture
of the American canal concession from
Nicaragua, and to immediately make a
treaty with the Diet of the greater re-
public of Central America giving her
control of the canal route through Nicar-
agua. In the negotiations Costa Rica has
not been consulted, it being well known
that she would not assent to a, violation
of treaty rights.
It has been suspected in some quarters
that England, who has always been
anxious to acquire at least a joint control
of the canal, might be working in collu-
sion with Japan in the "dickerings”
with the Diet now understood to be in
progress,' but nothing has yet come to
the surface to indicate that she has en-
couraged Japan in the move.

VERY SERIOUS CHARGE.
A Drummondville \Ian Before a Rochester
Court.
Rochester, N. Y., Sept, 4.—Benson
Hughes was arrested in Roohester last
night for criminally disposing of the
child of Frances Howard. Hughes is 21
years old, and came from Drummond-
ville, Ont., recently, Until late he was
employed as a photographic canvasser,
Ito had boarded with the Howard woman
for some time. A week ago she was
taken ill, and Hughes called a physician.
The latter found the woman in a serious
condition. She had given birth to a child
a short time before. He told Hughes to
take care of the child, and ordered the
mother to be removed to the Homoeo-
pathic hospital. Peritonitis bad set in
and the woman died a few Ipurs later.
Coroner Kleindienst took charge of the
ease. An autopsy was made, the result
of which has not been Blade publio.
There was a cut found in the child's
head. The infant was dead when born.
Hughes spent last night in a cell at
Police headquarters. This morning he
pleaded not guilty, ' and his ease was
adjourned. The inquest begun this morn-
ing. Hughes did not caro to testify, and
the coroner excused him. He was order-
ed, however, to be detained in the cus-
tody of the sheriff until further notice.
The inquest was concluded at the
morgue this morning. Benson Hughes,
with whom the Howard woman had
been living previous to her death, was at
the morgue. After the testimony had
been taken, Coroner Tileindienst charged
the jury. The coroner carefully reviewed
the evidence. In relation to the arrest of
Hughes, the coroner said that he was
arrested for disposing of the body of a
child, and because he was present at the
time.
The jury, after careful deliberation,
rendered the following verdict: "This
jury finds that Frances Howard came to
her death at the Homoeopathic hospital
on August 27th, 1897, as the result of a
criminal operation. This operation was
performed by some person or persons un-
known to this jury."
FOOLISH EUGENE DEBS.
He Now Expects to be Hanged as an
Anarchist.
St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 6.—Eugene V.
Debs spoke for one hour last night to
500 people assembled at National hall,
under the auspices of the Social Demo-
cracy. He said:—
"The Supreme Court of the United
States is a breeder of revolution, and a
few more injunctions will see all of us
walking side by side, and fighting for
the cause of humanity. I am anxious;
I am ready. The time is ripe, and it is
coming surely."
The speaker then lauded the Anar-
chists who wore hanged at Chicago, and
said that some day his wife may mourn
his loss as did the widows of those four
men.
"They are martyrs, and the time will
come when the world will pay tribute to
their names and memories," he added.
Mr. Debs then launched into an attack
upon capital and capitalists, and asserted
that it was his purpose to dispossess
them of the property amassed at the ex-
pense of labor.
NIHILISTS' VENGEANCE.
Tho Body of a WomanFound In Paris
Horribly Mutilated.
London, Sept. 6.—A special despatch
from Paris published this 'afternoon says
that the body of a woman, naked and
frightfully mutilated, the nose and ears
missing and the skull smashed in, has
been found in the River Seine. On the
middle of the deceased's back was
tattooed the words: "Long Live Poland"
and "Death to Traitors." The remains
are supposed to be those of a Nihilist
who had incurred the suspicion of her
fellow Nihilists. •
Berne, Sept. 4.—The remains of three
of the victims of the Mount Pleureur
avalanche disaster, including Bernard,
the young Englishman, have, been recov-
ered in a terribly mutilated condition.
A Canadian Girl's Death.
Buffalo, N.Y., Sept. 2.—A special de-
spatch to the Express from Lockport,
N.Y., to -night ,says "Gossips at Oloott
are excited over what appears to thein to
be the strange circumstances surround-
ing the death of a Canadian young wo-
man, who had been staying in the village
for about three weeks. She came from
Meaford, Ont., where her parents live.
The young woman, Miss Netta M.
Bailey, was about 22 years old. Soon
after arriving at Olcott she was taken
111, and on Tnesday night she died. A
consultation of physicians was held after
the death, and Coroner :Slocum, of

a
Paine's Celery Compound Brings
Health, Joy and Happiness.
You are willing to confess, poor suf-
ferer, that you have been bitterly dis-
appointed with past efforts, and that
in your estimation your future seems
dark and gloomy.
You and your friends alone are to
blame if disease is tightening its chain
around you, making you a sure cap
tive for the dark and dreaded grave.
Why keep a wife or husband in
feverish anxiety, daily bending• over
you with tearful oyes and almost brok-
en heart? Why cause yonr children's
voices to be hushed, and their childish
sports and games to be disregarded
and cast aside ? They certainly can-
not enjoy life when they see a father
or mother in the agonies of differing
and deep in mental despair.
You can change the scene by chang-
ing and bettering your physical con-
dition. In other words, you can be
cured and made well again by the use
of Paine's Celery Compound.
Your efforts, up to the present, to
throw off the encircling and deadly
bonds of disease have been vain and
futile. Your doctor's well meaning
work has not been productive of cheer-
ing results, and you are wasting money
on medicines that can never meet
you case.
Being assured of new health and
life by the use of Paine's Celery Com-
pound, you are sinning against heaven
and false to your family and friends if
you refuse to make trial of the great
agency that has saved thousands in
the past.
Paine's Celery Compound is the
grandest disease banisher that medical
science ever devised, and has the in,
dorsation of our best doctors, lawyers,
public men, merchants and others. Its
curing powers are wonderful, prompt
and sure, and it keeps every lean and
woman permenenily cured.

of Cod-liver Oil with Hypophos-
phites, can be taken as easily in
summer as in winter. Unlike the
plain oil it is palatable, and the
hypophosphites that are in it aid in
digestion and at the same time tone
up the system.
For sickly, delicate children, and
for those whose lungs are affected,
it is a mistake to leave it off in the
summer months. The dose may be
reduced if necessary.
We recommend the small size
especially for summer use, and for
children, where a smaller close is re-
quired. It should be kept in a cool
place after it is once opened.
