The terrible trials of the it gentler

Hood's Sarsaparilla is adapted for them

by Mrs, Place's letter.

years life has been made miserable by
constant illness. During this period there
have been six montha that I was not off
my bed, and for one year I suffered most
severely. I was
Nervous and Weak
and life seemed a burden.. It happened
that my husband bought a bottle of
Hood's Sarsaparilla and I commenced to
take it in email doses. In a short time it
was evident that it was helping me. In.
two weeks I felt that I was being greatly
oenefited. About this time our youngest
son, then 10 years of age, was taken down
with typhoid fever, Ile passed on to his
reward, and soon others of the family
were taken ill, until I was the only one

Canada lit* Now a Poaftion Among the
Nations.
Quebec, Aug. 0, -Vile Dominion Gov-
ernment
ernment steamer Druid left the Queen's.
wharf shortly before 7 o'clock yesterday
morning with the members of the Re-
ception Committee and representatives
of the press. Breakfast was served on
board, and the Druid proceeded as far as
St. Petronilie, Island of Orleans, where
she met the R.M.S. Labrador. The Pre-
mier and Lady Laurier left tho Labrador
and ombar•1;_ed on board the Druid, which
went up the river to Chaudiere, asthe
time of debarkation here was fixed for
10 o'clock, and there were two hours to
spare. The distinguished pair were heart-
ily cheered as the two stainers parted
off St.Joseph.
.Arrived at the Queen's wharf, the
party landed, and were received ^with
tumultuous cheers from the immense
crowdathered to greet Canada's Pre-
mier. Sir Wilfrid and Lady Laurier,
Hon F. G. Marchand, and Mayor Parent
were driven to the Chateau Frontenao.
At the park in the afternoon Sir Wil-
frid made a short speech in reply to the
address of Welcome read by the mayor..
In the course of 1t he said, after express -
lag his pleasure at being home: "MY idea
is that wo should not continue the olds
time discords and hatreds, but unite for
the common good, We must uphold our
Britannic aspiration and work for the
future of Canada, our common country.
We have also Imperial interests to safe-
guard, and in this connection you will
renumberthat these ties are new stronger
than over, for have we not secured a more
complete omnnleroial liberty through the
denunciation of the German and Belgian
treaties? This is a measure for which we
have unsuccessfully asked for years. Now
England readily makes the sacrifice of
her own interests for Canada, Some are
not at all pleased at nay loyalty to Eng-
land. I can only say that my heart is
overflowing with gratitude to her, and
that I can never be aught else but
loyal to such a country. This, however,
Is Hat all. Canada must be made to tel -
vanes, and to this end her Government
should be one of earnest business inon,
aiming at her development. There are
some who live only to make war on Gov-
ernments. We work only for the coun-
try's good, Our Government, it is true,
has not existed very lone, but it's time
has not been lost. In fact, without wish-
ing to injure the feelings of any one
here, I think it has done more in the
same time than any previous Atinxiais-
tration. While on this subject there is
ono matter of special interest to Que-
becers on which I should like to speak
to you. . It is that of the fast line of
trans-Atlantic steamers. I think that I
am in a position to assure you that it is
now a certainty, and that inside of two
years you will see vessels equal in speed
to any merchantmen now afloat enter
the harbor of Quebec. In equipment,
etc., too, they will be the best that eau
be had. Some parties have spread the re-
port that the contract would never be
carried out. I do not positively assure you
that the fast lino is a `fait accompli,'
but believe that all will yet be well as
regards it. It is true that the Messrs
Petersen have encountered unusual
difficulties, but I believe that they will
disappear. Then, too, the gold fields of
British Columbia are now attracting the
greatest notice on the other side, and
inducing immigration. In short, Can .d•t
has lately conte more prominently for-
ward than over, and has taken a place
among tho 015810ns of the world. Let me
nttura you, too, that her interests will
never he allowed to suffer by conflict with
those of England. 'What we now need is
the co-operation of nil, the cessation of
strife. I thank you all most heartily for
the welcome you have accorded me. I
thank you, Mr. Mawr, and I thank tho
good Liberals whom I see round mc, to-
day. Even snare, though, I must thank
those Conservatives who I sea have
turned out in such numbers t1 rt' eeit e
