On account of the political troubles in the Transvaal during late years shares have fallen in value and Barnato has lost many millions of dollars, which may have had the effect of unsettling his mind. His wealth could, however, still bo counted by scores of millions. He built a princely house in London while South Africa shares were booming two or three years ago. Barn- ato's origin is doubtful, but he is said to: have been a circus rider early in life.
