Depends upon keeping the blood in a
pure condition, free from disease germs,
and yet there are very few people who
have perfectly pure blood. Hood's
Sarsaparilla cleanses, vitalizes and en-
riches the blood, throwing out the
impurities that clog and irritate the
system and permits no lodgment of the
seeds.of disease. Read the following:
"I cannot recommend Hood's Sarsapa-
rilla too highly for it has done wonders
for me. I was

and all run down and my health was so
poor I could not get out of doors. I was
not able to do anything, being troubled
with asthma and heart disease. I was
nervous and could not sleep nights. I
had become completely discouraged when
I happened to read an advertisement of
Hood's Sarsaparilla and concluded to give
it a trial. After taking the first bottle I
felt better and since taking five bottles I
am so much improved that I feel like a
new man. I am now able to do a fair

at night. My heart does not trouble me
and I have realized great relief for asthma.
I feel full of courage once more and life
seems brighter and worth living. I would
recommend Hood's Sarsaparilla to all
afflicted as I have been, for I know it will
help them. If this statement of facts
will be of benefit, you are welcome to use
it as you please." HENRY J. WRI41iT.

MASSACRE IN CRETE.
TROUBLES HAVE AGAIN BROKEN
out.
Christian Q,+uarters of Cauca in Plantes--
People Massacred at Their Own Doors, --
Marines Landed,
London, Feb. 6.—A despatch to The
Central News from Athens says that des-
perate fighting has occurred between the
Christians and Mohammedans in the Is-
land of Crete. The Musssulrnans have sot
fire to the City of Canea and the place is
now burning. The city is in a state of
anarchy, and a Christian is safe nowhere.
Many Christians who had locked thom-
selv'es in their houses were driven out by
the flames, only to meet death at the
hands of the Turkish soldiers, who shot
them down at sight. A number of Chris-
tians have succeeded in finding refuge on
the w rships in the harbor, but the out-
look for those still in the city is very
precarious, The situation is so critical
that marines have been landed from the
British and French warships to protect
the Consulates of their respective govern-
ments.
.A. later despatch to the Central News
says that the Christian quarters in Canon
have been almost destroyed. The various
consulates are crowded with fugitives.
The despatch further says that fully
300 persons have been killed in Canon.
Many of them lost their lives while at-
tempting to reach the warships,
POSTMASTER CAMPBELL.
Charges Against a Government Official of
Goderich Now Tinder investigation --The
Witnesses Examined.
Goderich, Feb. 0.—Tho official inquiry
of to -day before Commissioner Seager
opened at 10 o'clock in the charges
against Mr, Win. Campbell, postmaster,
Goderioh. Mr. Bishop appeared for the
fust -Office Department, Mr. Garrow and
Mr. Hays for Mr. Campbell. Miss Jackell
and Miss Agnes Hays were called and
said that in the fall of 1894 while they
were attending the Model School at God-
erich and went to the post -office one even-
ing to mail a letter the wicket was closed
and Mr. Campbell calve out to the public
office and received the letter, and, remark-
ing that they were two fine model girls,
apparently attempted to put his arm
around Miss Hays, which she prevented
by stepping out of his way, and they left
the office much offended.
Several witnesses wore called. to prove
interference in politics. James C. McIn-
tosh, Won. McDonald and others gave evi-
dence about curtain letters being opened.
Wln, Logan, R. Vanstine and Robert
Bell were called in regard to alleged in-
terference by Mr. Campbell to their detri-
ment in the salt and marble business, in
which he was a rival of theirs.
THE HOME HELPERS.
Her Majesty Endorses Lady Aberdeen's
Scheme.
Ottawa, Ont., Feb. 0.—Lady Aberdeen
has communicated to the Queen, through
the usual channels, the outline. of the
scheme. She proposes to commemorate
the diamond jubilee by the organization
of the Victorian Order of Home Helpers.
In reply she received to -day a cable mes-
sage which is an endorsation of the pro-
posal to commemorate the occasion by
acts of mercy. The message received by
her Excellency from Sir Arthur Bigge,
private secretary to her Majesty, is as
follows: "In reply to your telegram, the
Queen has refrained from expressing ap-
proval of any particular scheme for com-
memorating the diamond jubilee, though,
of course, any project for the relief of the
suffering of the sick in Canada will be
assured of her Majesty's sincere sympathy.

The Australian Murderer.
San Francisco, Cal., Feb. 6.—Murderer
Butler maintained his equanimity, and
told a former associate that as soon as he
reached Australia he would secure his
release by turning Queen's evidence and
establishing an alibi for himself regard-
ing Lee Weller's murder. He says nothing
.. • to the charges of murdering Preston,
Lasab, Hardwood, and the others. The
police and the Aust'raliali detectives aro
not impressed by these declarations,which
they pronounce a scheme of Butler's to
enlist public sympathy. Butler's state-
ment that five years ago he was a. fireman
in a local laundry, where ho was known
as Aslie, was confirmed to -day by an
employe of the same lrtundry who visited
tho city prison and at 01100 identified
Butler as Ashe. The recognition was
mutual.

Lines on rthe Death of Laura
and Mary Quinton.
To -day, dearest Mary
I was thinking of thee,
'And the days when light hearted
And happy and free.
Not a vestage of sorrow
To trouble our heart
Or a thought, my dear Mary,
That soon we must part.
No rose in the garden
Had more show of bloom,
Than had thy fair cheeks
Which have faded so soon.
You made us all happy
With innocent glee,
And your sayings will long
Be remembered by me.
Farewell, dearest Mary
A long fate -you well,
lily thoughts at this moment,
No mortal can tell.
Your happy home circle,
Where once there were frye.
And in less than three months,
Only three left alive.
For now little Laura,
That dear little dove,
She has gone with Mary
