RABIES AT PARIS.,
A Doli Bit Three Persons and Dietl of
Iiydrophobia--Tlio Pasteur Treatment.
Paris, Nov. 3.—A case of rabies has
oome under the notice of the Paris Board
of Health and much interest is exulted
by 11. It appears that about the 28rd of
last month a small dog belonging to Mr.
David Sheppard was sick and got worse,
and on Thursday was decidedly ill -tern
pored, when it bit Mr. Geo. Sheppard,
who is attending the School of Pedagogy
in Toronto but was home on a vacation.
The same day it bit Mr. George New-
man, Arlington Hotel 'bus driver. Mr.
G. Sheppard consulted bis physician
about his wound, but it was not at the
time thought serious. Miss Grace Shop -
pard, George's sister, ronlarked thathe
had been bitten by tire animal on the
Wednesday before, but had thought it of
so little importance that she did not go
to a doctor until a couple of days after-
wards. In the meantime Veterinary Sur -
goon Faskiu was called in to see the
dog and at onoe said the ease was sus-
picious of hydrophobia. The animal died
on Sunday. A post-mortem examination
oonflrmed the diagnosis of rabies, wlai,_oh
has since been • again confirmed by Dr,
Bryce and Mr. McKenzie of the Pectin -
Mal Board of Health. In all throe persons
have been bitten and one young mens
ber of the Sheppard family licked and
fondled by the dog. Mr. Sheppard has
decided to start for New York to -morrow
. with bis son and two daughters to have
them treated in the Pasteur Institute.
Mr. Newman will likely go along with
them. A11 dogs that aro suspected of be-
ing contaminated by the rabid animal
will be destroyed at once.

STRATFORD NEWS.
Pergii , Ont., Sept. 22, 1896
Gentlemen :
The following testimonial, relative to
your Paiue's Celery Compound, will no
doubt interest all who remember my
testimonial given morethan two years
ego
This long interval has afforded me
ample opportunity for ,judging of the
effects of the medicine..
I have always valued the duration
of a cure more than the temporary re-
lief. It is difficult, if indeed it is pos-
sible, to get a medicine that will pro-
duce a pernmailent good effect, so much
being dependant on right use and diet
ary regulations. We must help Paiue's
Celery Compound; we must consider
the quantity as well as the quality of
the food we eat. I am convilnced by
experience that, if this medicine be
properly used and afforded fair play, it.
will do good work.
1 am past seventy; yet, since 1 took
the Paine's Celery Compound, I feel as
well as an old man can feel. For this
condition of health I can think of. no
other cause than rise of the Compound.
I am, gentlemen,
Yours thankfully,
JOl3N IRELAND,

Buffalo, Nov. 1.---Provinoial Detective
John Murray, of Toronto, who is here
to obtain the extradition .of Mrs. Olive
Sternaman on the charge of murder of
her husband in Cayuga, is certain that
the Crown has a good case. Mr. Murray
says that there is no doubt that St erne
man .died from the .effects of arsenical
poisoning. The case is to be decided next
Thursday, and he has no fear of the re-
sult. "The physicians found arsenic in
the stomach of the husband, and they
state that this must have been 'adminis-
tered withinforty eight hours ;prior to
his death," said the detective, "and this;
is the strong point of ' the case. Then
,her first'busband, Chipman, died in the
same manner, and he, too, had a life in-
