There is a fair volume of trade in
wholesale departments at Toronto. The
colder weather is favorable for heavy
goods, and prospects generally are con-
sidered satisfactory. Prices of cotton
goods are firm at the late advances and
woolens are steady. The higher prices of
wheat and flour are well held, although
they check business to some extent. An
unfavorable feature is the large number
of failures in this province. Profits have
been cut pretty fine, through keen
'competition and collections have not been
up to general expectations,
The result of extended enquiry among
dry goods, woolen, and clothing houses in
Afontreai, as to how 4th October paper
ran off, would tend to show that the
proportion paid was a fair average. A
few houses professed disappointment
with results, butthe general run state
that payments were up to their expecta-
tions, aud iu some cases that improvement,
though, not marked, was noticeable in
remittances, while several houses reported
from 60 to 65 per cent. of customers' paper
provided for. With regard to general
trade there is rather more doing, but in
moderate lots, and there is an absence of
any heavy buying.
Here and There.

years. Although constantly brought into
contact; with liquor in the course of my
work I have never had at any time the
least temptation to drink, and I enjoy a
health and clearness of intellect that I
have not yet ceased wondering at, so
strong is its contrast with my former
condition, for a more hopeless , despair-
ing wreck probably never entered your
institute. Oakville could not give nae

back my old sell." And they all tell
the same story. Send for pamphlets and
