itself the greatest friend of woolen.
Thousands write that they have been
given health and strength by its use.
It is the great blood purifier, and con-

to try Hood's Sarsaparilla, She said It
had cured her and would no doubt cure
my wife. So we tried it, and to say that
its effect is wonderful, is only using a
mild expression. It appears to be build-

as we are a family of eleven, there are
eleven of us rejoicing at the result.

A REIGN OF .TERROR.
The Township of Borneo Iifariitoulin 7e -
land in a 31 -tad State ..Three lerothors At
rested on a Number of Charges.
Gore Bay, Sept. 24.—A series of as-
saults, houeo, barn and orop buntings in
the township of Burpoo, Manitoulin
Ielana, 25 miles from here. togetbor with
burglaries, housebreaking and attempts
at murder have had the effect of arousing
the farmers throughout the district and
for months there has been a reign of
terror. So great has been the excitement
and alarm, caused prinoipally by five
Men, representing as many families,
among whom there has been a deadly
fend for years, that the Government was
finally appealed to, and a few days ago
Inspeetor John Murray arrived here to
investigate the ease. Ile found affairs
worse than was dscribed, but with the
arrest of three of the ringleaders it is'
hoped that the depredations may cease.
All the families oonoerned are related
either by blood or intermarriage, and
this apparently has but increased the.
bitterness of the fond, which actively
broke out a year ago, when Daniel
MoWeirter's house was set on fire. Those
who fired the building openly boasted of
ib, and threatened to put an end to the
existence of more than one settler, Tho
house burning was followed by an at-
tempt at murder, when Joseph Bailey,
an illiterate desperado, and ono of those
suspected of the arson, attacked Samuel
'Wright, a farmer, with an axe, burying
the blade in his right breast, and indict-
ing a wound that it wee at first thought
would prove fatal. Wright, however, re•
covered, and Bailey eves sent to the Cen-
tral Prison fora year.
On his release last Tune the feud was
renewed with increased bitterness, and
he, with his brothers Robert and Samuel
terrorized the whole countryside. Among
those who testified against Bailey in the
Wright ease was it farmer named 'sage
Bailey, an old bachelor, and a cousin of
the prisoner. Against this man, who is
locally known as "Black Ileo," the Bail-
eys were particularly bitter, threatening
all kinds of dire vengeance. On August
80 these two brothers went to Isaac
Bailey's house to parry out their threats.
Isnao was not at lioiuo, so the two then
broke down the door and stole x+20 from a
suit of clothes in the housw. They then
proceeded to upset every=thing, and left
the house in the filthiesteoonditiou imag-
inable. Several persons saw thong go to
the house, and Isaac Bailey's father saw
them acme away, although fear of the
two desperadoes made him loth to tell of
it,
Somebody told Isaac what had hap-
pened, and be went to iris house and
pried the lock, in company with another
Bailey, about 6 p. in. Shortly after he
heard that Robert and Joseph were going
to his house to kill hien. Itis unele, Colin
Campbell, advised hhn to stay away, but
he got four friends and went and lay in
the bush, where they watched his house
for about three-quarters of an hour.
Robert, Joseph and Samuel Bailey came
just after dark, accompanied by two
younger members of the fancily, and
smashed open the door again. The three
named swelled. the house, and finding
uobody, came out, and said that if they
naught that ,t--. black --- —.— Ike"
he'd never swear against anyone again.
They made these throats so loudly that
the watohors heardthem. The outcome of
this was that Government aid was
evoked, and Inspector Murray was de-
tailed to work on tho case. Iie arrived on
Wednesday of last week, and after a
rough drive of 116 miles from Gore Bay
to Burpeo arrived upon the scene and
within 8 hours.,had collected all 'Ms evi-
dance and had Joseph, Robert and Sam.
uel Bailey under arrest. Two of the
brothers are married, but the other is a
utero stripling, although he is looked
upon as tho most reckless of tho three.
The prisoners were brought before
Magistrates Mullen, Thorburn and Fraser
at Gore Bay on Wednesday and Were
committed to jail for trial on the
charges of housebreaking and burglary,
but as the magistrates appeared to want
more evidonco in the arson case than
would be suili:clent in the High Court
trial Mr. Murray reserved the charge of
house -burning for the consideration of
the Grand Jury.
The excitement in the district is sc
intense and the feeling so bitter that it
is feared that murder may ho the result
of the feud, and the throe brothers were
removed to ;~ault Ste. Marie for safe.

Paine's Celery Compouud the Choice
gLot the Ablest Physicians.
It is well that every one should know
that Paine's Celery compound, is not
an ordinary patent medicine such as
nervines, sarsaparillas, bitters and other
liquid concoctions now so extensively
advertised in every direction. Paine's
Celery Compound is as far beyoud these
common preparations as the diamond
is superior to cheap glass.
Paine's Celery Compound possesses
extraordinary virtues and powers for
health giving and life lengthening. It
is as harmless as it is good, and is the
only medicinee that the best medical
men recommend with confidence. Pro-
fessor Edward E. Phelps, M. D., its dis-
coverer; gave this ntarvelious medicine
to his profession as a positive eure for
sleeplessness, nervousness, dyspepsia,
wastingstrength,biliousness, neuralgia,
liver complaint, rheumatism and kid-
ney troubles; and since its introduction
to the public, hundreds of thousands on
this continent have raised from sick-
ness to the enjoyment of perfect health.
No other medicine in the world was
ever so highly honored and recommend,
because none ever accomplished so
much.
To -day, when the ablest doctors are
called upon to prescribe for weak, run-
down, over worked and debiltated men
and women, they invariably adyiss the
use of Paine's Celery Compound, Thou-
sands of testimonials giving proof of
almost miraculous cures some in every
year from working people, artisans,
merchants, professional men and people
of wealth, all asserting strongly that
Paine's Celery Compound makes people
well.
Ilave you made trial of Paine's Cel-
ery Compound, siek friend? If not, do
not delay another hour; procure a bottle
and test the virtues of the only medi-
cine that can successfully meet your
case. Be sure that you get "Paine's,"
the kind that cures.
