CHATHAM NEWS,
Emancipation Day' --The Thomasville Drs'
aster—Largo Purchase of Lumber
Chatham, July 24;—Colored people of
this sootier, are making preparations for
a celebration of Emancipation day on a
large sdale at Buxton. There will be two
bands, a procession, speeches, races, and
probably fireworks.
The open verdict returned by the cor-
oner's jury which inquired into the cause
o
of the recdn n
t tree collision at Thames -
villa is regarded in this city as extraordi-
nary. There were sufficient facts obtain-
able at the time of the occurrence to jus-
tify a very pronounced verdict.
The army worm is playing sad havoc
on the fertile plain lands beyond Tilbury.
This afternoon Mr, Angus Penne-
father, a North Chatham hotel man,. was
planed under arrest on. the charge of the
larceny of a trunk from John Twohey.
Twohey boarded with defendant, but
left without settling, whereupon the lat-
ter obtained possession of his trunk by
breaking into a stable, Prisoner was re-
leased till Monday.
The gas excitement at Leamington is
being reflected in this city, the site of
which is believed to be a gas -yielding
region, and it is not improbable that
boring operations may bo resumed. At
Leamington yesterday Collector Gott, of
Atnherstburg; T. H. Copus, manager
Ontario Natural Gas Company; Mayor
Johnson, Reeve McKenzie, and others,
went down to gas well No. 2, for the
purpose of testing the rock pressure of
the well, Mr, Copus having brought with
him the necessary gauge, After operating
the well to its utmost capacity, and al-
lowing it to gush for twenty minutes,
the gauge was applied, when it showed
a pressure of 300 pounds to the square
inch This is said to be the highest rook
pressure yet given by any well on the
shore.
John Piggott, of the firm of Piggott

A syndicate, composed of Messrs. J.
Abram, I. Hahuo, and W. II.. Carswell,
were to -day formally awarded the con-
tract for the now sedementation basin to
be used to settle the river water before it
is turned into the filters. The price is
0,073, A Windsor firm was 5122 less
than Abram Ss Company. The commis-
sioners thought that the amount of
difference was too small to justify them
in giving she contracts to outside parties.

astrous Fire at Savannah, Ga,
Belleville, July 2.1.—Shortly before
seven o'clock last night fire broke out in
the drying kiln at the Belleville Box
tend Basket Company's factory on the
river side, off Moira street. In a few
minutes the thanes were beyond control,
and the building and its contents de-
stroyed, only a portion of the walls be-
ing left standing in a ruined condition.
The loss on machinery and stook is esti-
mated at from 512,000' to $15,000, on
which there is an insurance of 57,000 in
the Phoenix, the Guardian, and the Bu t-
ish America Insurance Companies. John
Laugher's pump factory, adjoining, was
damaged to tihe extent of about $200,
which is covered by insurance. Twenty -
live people have been thrown out of em-
ployment by the fire.

Quebec, ,Tuly 20.—Fire broke out to-
night at St. Nicholas, fifteen miles above
Quebec, on the south side of the river,
and for a long time the chureh and con-
vent were in eminent danger of destruc-
tion. The residents had no appliances
for fighting the flames, but did their
best, and at 10.30, when the fire seemed
to be under control somewhat, six dwell-
ing houses had been destroyed, those of
Ignace Paquett, Gabriel Desrochers,
Benj. Do Villle, George Berdard, James
Martineau, and Modesto Desroches.
There is no insurance.
Owen Sound, Ont., July 20. --On Sat-
urday night, about 0.30 o'cloock, fire
was discovered in the second story of T.
E. Vanstone & Company's dry goods
store. How the fire originated is still in
doubt, as the usual Saturday night's
trade was being done. It was very quickly
under the control of the firemen, but the
damage by water, smoke and fire will
run between $5,000' and 58,000. The prop-
erty was insured.

Caused by the Altercation 'With Ris son—
Determination of the Toting- Man to Marry
miss Wilson.
New York, July 24. --The Journal tris
morning, under a Newport date, says
that Cornelius Vanrlerbilt's stroke of
paralysis came after a violent scene with
his son in opposition to his marriage
with Miss Grace Wilson, many years the
senior of young Vanderbilt. During a
conversation with his son a week ago
last Tuesday when young Vanderbilt re-
fused to break off the marriage, his father
arose, his face livid with rage and anger,
but before the anathema which he would
have hurled at his disobedient son could
be uttered he clutched at his throat and
fell from the stroke of paralysis. Young
Vanderbilt declared that nothing would
move, nothing could make Mm alter his
determination to make Miss Wilson his
wife, and if need be, ho would repudiate
the whole family, which loved him so
dearly.
Prior to this Mr. Vanderbilt had made
a codicil to his will cutting off his son
with $6,000 a year, in trust invested.
When it was announced that death might
follow,, Mrs. Vanderbilt and her daugh-
ter went tether son, who persistently re-
fused to approach his father, and pleaded
with him to ask a forgiveness, and seek
a reconciliation. This young Vanderbilt
refused moss positively to do, and then
gra. and Miss Vanderbiltwent on their
knees and prayed the boy to do as they
asked. He stubbornly refused to see his
father, or to enquire as to his condition.

ATERRIBLE CONDITION
IN MIDSUMMER.
Paine's Celery Compound a Fo .-
tiler and Builder,
"I have no ambition, vim or energy
these days, I feel all -gone,' listless, des-
pondent and miserable, and I often
wish that this weary, weary life was
o'er.
The above declaration and humble
confession is made at this particular
season by young and old who are out
of gear physically, and as a souse -
queues, are easily prostrated by the
prevailing' hot weather.
It is suicidal for sickly men and
women to attempt to pass through the
terrible heat of `summer without the
help of such a health and strength
builder as Paine's CtIery Compound.
Weary, weak and used up people,
who complain of languor, lassitude,
want of buoyancy, mental depression'
and fatigue by day, require the toning
effects of such a medicine as Paine's
Celery Compound. The use of this
great stimulating and health -building
remedy soon restores mental and bodi-
ly vigor, and gives that true health
and strength that can combat all the
dangers that beset us in July.
Paine's Celery, Compound to -day is
doing a mighty work for thousands of
half dead people. Letters received
daily from every part of Canada show
that the great medicine has rescued
people from the grave, and is giving
theta a new life.
Reader, we counsel you to give
Paine's Celery Compound an honest
trial if you would be well, yigorous
and happy during the most trying
months of the year.
