What might have resulted in a dis-
asterous fire, occurred on the premises
of Mr. Thos Shapton, a little West of
the Village, on Tuesday morning last
about 5 o'clock. It seems a quantity
of ashes containing coals had been
emptied into an old barrel in a small
shed used as a workshop, and during
the night the barrel took fire and spread
to the shed and before it was noticed
the .entire building and contents were
reduced to ashes. Luckily the wind
was in the South for had it been in the
East, it is altogether probable that the
barn which was in close proximity
would also have fallen a prey to the
devouring elements. As it is, the loss
to Mr. Shapton is not heavy, but it
should be a warning to all to be very
careful with their ashes.
The business men should see that the
snow is promptly cleaned from the front
of their respective ' places of business
and thereby add to the pleasure and
comfort of customers and the public
generally.
