The finances of the cit of Montreal are
saidto be in a worse condition than ever
before, and the aldermen are looking
around to find means to meet current re-
quirements. The chairman of thefinance
committee proposes the floating of a new
$2,000,000 loan, but many of the aldermen
are adverse to this, as they claim that the
city is too heavily burdened with taxation
already. All the requisitions of the va-

DAIRY PRODUCTS.
Mr, McLennan moved the ];:Rouse into
committee to consider a resolution declar-
ing it expedient to introduce a bill to
amend the Dairy Products Aot of 1893,
and explained that he desired to protect
the Canadian cheese industry by providing
for the branding of the cheese and cases.
Mr, McMullen (Huron) deemed it abso-
lutely necessary in the interests of the
cheese trade that the date of manufacture
and the name of the factory should be
branded on the article.
Mr. Taylor thought the reolution cover-
ed the ground fairly well, with the excep-
tion that no provision was maclo for the
inspection of cheese at the factories. That
should bo added to the resolution before it
left the committee. A penalty should also
be provided for failure to brand the cheese.
Itis experience led hint to believe that no
factory branded cheese as that of Septem-
ber make, but the buyers purchase cheese
during the months of July, Juno, and
August, and held it until September,
when they branded it as that month's
make.
