TEUIISDAY, JAN, 17th 1895.
THE PRIVK COUNCIL'S DELI
SION.
The announcement just made in the
8ablel;rams that the Privy Council in
England is to give its deeisiou revers
fag that of the Supreme Court of Can-
ada, in the matter of the Manitoba
echools, is one that will be disappoint
i1,g to many of our readers. We re-
gret exceedingly the necessity there
exists for re opening thiss much sexed
question; indeed, it is impossible to say
how far reachi• g the cousequences may
prove, 'I he result of this decision in
Sayer of the Roman Catholic miuority
in Manitoba will entail a heavy respon-
sbheiity on the Dominion government,
whichever course may be pursued..
Should the federal government, ou the
ease being brought before them by this
decision of the Privy Council, dismiss
the apneal—then no further actiou can
be taken; but if the governor in Coun-'
ell should decide that injustice has
been done to the R. C. minority in lifani-
toba, by the passage of the Provincial
School Act of $1890, then it will be for
the Dominion government to recom-
mend Parlament to pass remedial legis-
lation. Now that Sir. John .Thompson
is removed from the scene of action
and a Premier succeeds, who is both a
Protestant and an Orangeman,—not to
speak of an oyerwhelmih.tr majority of
Protestants in the Cabinet,—we may
reasonably hope that much of the bit-
ter less hitherto displayed throughout
this vexed questiou will be ameleora-
ted, if not altogether removed from the
sphere of polities—and that a calmer,
judgement will characterize the dis-
cussions which may take place in ar-
riving at a peaceful solution. One
chin;; is certain—the Cabinet at Ottawa,
as well as the general public, will now
realize the great loss sustained by Can-
ada in the removal of the late Premier'
whose calm judgement and a great
legal attainments will be sorely missed
in the counsels of his country.
