Mysterious Fire at Lucan,
Lucan, Ont., Feb. 7.—About 7 o'clock
this eyt;ning a fire was discoyered in a
stable belonging to Mr, Robert McLean,
situated on the southerly side of the
railway track. A straw stack adjoin-
ing the building was discovered to be
on fire, which quickly commuuicted
with the stable in which were two
stallions and three mares, all standard
bred; also three colts were running
loose around the straw stack. They
were all saved. The engine with
plenty of help was at the fire in quick
time, and only for a scarcity of water
the building would have been•saved
with very little damage. The origin
of the fire is a mystery, but there are
suspicions that the property was fired
maliciously. The loss is about $500,
without any insurance on the building
or contents.
Pinned Him to a Tree,
Wiarton, Feb, 8,—On Sunday last
the saddest occurrence which has hap-
pened in this part of the township
took place on the farm of Mrs. Thomas
Aikens, of the fifteenth sideroad. near
Cllesley Lake. Mr. Thomas Aikens, an
estimable young man, and the only
support of a widowed mother, had hit
ched up a span of spirited horses to
drive his mother and sisters to the fore-
noon service in the Presbyterian Church
at Skipness While they were get-
ting into the sleigh he went to the
horses'theads:to keep them quiet, but
they took fright and ran into the orch-
ard, he all the while hanging on by
the bits. They ran up against an ap-
ple tree in the orchard, where the
tongue of the sleigh pinned him be-
tween its point and the apple tree and
crushed in his breast, killing him in
stautly. His sister was holding the lines
and hisiast directions to her were co drop
them and try and save hereelf. The.
sad occurrence has cast a gloom over
the neighborhood and the deepest sym-
pathy is felt for his widowed mother
and family. The funeral to Elsinore
cemetry was ery largely attended -
