LOCAL HAPPENINGS:
Shipments.
Since commencing operations a few
weeks ago the Rollins & Williams mil-
ling Co. have shipped upwards of a dozen
car loads of fiour to the eastern 'markets. -
Mr. T Prier is making large shipments of
hay to the old country wearly.-A con-
siderable quantity of ashes has been ship-
ped from this station lately to the Stater(
for fertilizing purposes. -Grain is now
moving out of the elevators at a lively
rate, preparatory to taking in this year's
crop.
The weather the pad few days has been
cool here,though frost has not yet affected
anything.
-Henry Makins has pnrahased Mr. J,
Turner's farm on the Bayfield road, near
Brnoefiell, paying therefor the sum of $7,-
000.

A quiet wedding took place in Stephen
Monday, at the residence of Geo Peuhale,
Lis sister Mattie being married to Mr
Haggle Kilmer of the City Flouring Mills,
St Thomas. Rev Mr McDonagh tied the
knot in the presence of a few of the near
relatives.

It is underatood the Ontario Govern-
ment is not /satisfied with the statements

and has ordered an enquiry to be made in

ment, and G. G. McPherson, of the same
place by the executors.
Prof. Shrievee was arraigned before
Squire Snell one day last week on a charge
of unlawfully practicing dentistry, pre-
ferred by H. Kinsman, dentist of this
plaoe, and Sued $20 and costs. It is well-
known that the professor goes about the
country extracting teeth free of charge,
but this does not eliminate him of the law,
as it was shown that he benefited in the
sale of medicine thus advertised.
The Rev W. Kettlewel]. of Paris, Grand
Councillor of Royal Tempters of Ontario,
will conduct the Presbyterian service in
the Town Hall in the morning, • and in the
Main. et church in the evening of Sept.

His many friends bere will regret to
learn of the death of Ernest Smith, who
some years ago clerked in 5. C. Hersey's
grocery. He died in Elmira., N. Y., on
Friday last at the age of 26 years, of
typhoid fever,with which he was ill soyer-
al weeks. Deceased was highly respected
while a resident of Exeter; and in Elmira,
according to an extended obituary in one
of themapers, he was esteemed very much.
He leaves a wife and infant to mourn his
demise. teels:,
W. E. Browning attended the Bicycle
meet at Seaforth on Wednesday the 23rd
and took the two Mile County Champion-
ship making the distance in 5.49 1-5 and
receiving a handsome Oak Seeretery,
valued at $511. He also entered the Ono
mile, tbree minute class and came in
ahead on the first heat but being unable
to procure the same machine fer the final
he had to ride a broken wheel ripel finished
fourth. He rode well ands surprised
everyone: especially the Seaforth Boys, as
he had no training whatever.
The scholars and teachers of the Trivitt
Memorial Sunday School, spent a very en-
joyable afternoon last Wednesday, in the
grove just north of the village. Swings,
foot -ball, and races were the rage, to say
nothing about the sumptuous tea that Was
provided by the ladies. lemur Ca,rling jr.,

were kept well employed catering for the
enjoyment of all. Base -balls, Bats, books

passed by your lodge regarding the action of
themounoil in the matter of 310 granted by
them to Resist in tho celebration held hero on
the 12th July.
In resolution 2 it, is stated that the grant
was made grudgingly and with taunts and jeers
upon your order. On these matters you were
certainly misinformed. Of the willingness or
unwillingness of the grant I am not prepared
to say, as they themselves can only tell their
inward feeling, but I can assure you that
neither taunt orjeer was expressed by any
member of the Commil on that occasion.
