Governor Flower has stated that the
duty of 30 cents on Caoadian
barley has closed nearly all the malt
houses in Oswego and vicinity. If this
be the case the McKinley Bill has at
least -wrought one good reform in the
closing of these melt houses.

The day before fire swept their village
out of existence, the ratepayers of Bee -
ton voted down a by-law under which it
was intended to provide for a system of
water works. The misfortune that has
overtaken them is a striking, -warning to
the people of other towns of the folly
of striving to keep down taxes at the
expense of all efficient system of fire
protection.

The Provincial elections in New
Brunswick on Saturday resulted in the
Blair administration being sustained.
The number of members elected was as
follows i—Government, 24 ; Opposition,
13; Independent 2. with two to hear
from, which will probably increase the
Government's majority. A feature of
the day's polling was the defeat of
premier Blair in York County.

Thitty thousand people in the United
States have secured over one-half the
wealth of the entire nation, and a million
citizens, able and willing to toil, are
begging their bread. This is one re-
spect, at least, in which Canada com-
pares more than favorably with her
neighbor. The very rich and extremely
poor are alike rare on this side of the
lines.

The outbreak of pleuro-peeumonia
among American cattle on shipboard at
Deptford will doubtless prevent the ad-
mission of live animala from the United
States to British inland towns for an-
other year at least. This will be a bad
thing for our neighbors but a good one
for the agriculturists of Canada, since
the exclusive privileges which Canada
now enjoys- in the British market is
worth $10 to $12 per head on every
beast exported from this country to
Great Britain.

If a great dead meat trade can be es-
tablished between the Northwest Terri-
tories and China and Japan, it will be a
good thing for Canada, both East and
West. These eastern empires are both
more easy of access from the prairies of
the Territories than Great Britain, and
if the owners of the immense herds now
growing up on these plains can find a
market in Asia, stock raisers in the East
ern Provinces will escape the keen com-
petition that must come ere long if the
cattle raised in the whole of Canada are
forced to seek the British market.

The following table shows the number
of head of certain kinds of live stock in
Ireland and Ontario, the figures for the
former being taken from the Imperial
census returns and for the latter from
the report of the Provincial Departmett
of Agriculture :
On tit' io. Ireland,
No. of horned cattle 1978,i 00 4,448,000
No of sheen. -1,003,000 4,74.000
No. of hogs. ... 1,.17 000

florses (in the ease of Ireland) covers mules
as welt.
The foregoing comparison is not flat-
tering to Ontario. The area of Ireland
is but .9E1e-seventh that of this province,
.and yet the number both of, cattle and
;sheep raised in the little island is con-
siderably more than double that raised
here. The farmers of Ontario have
niade a good deal of progress in stock
raisin,J during the last few years but
,taere is 'Enoch more to be accomplished.

Oliver Mowat celebrated, the 21st an-
oiversary of hia Premiership of this
Province Friday. He has been Premier
of Ontario for so long a period that a
parallel to his experience is not to be
found in the governineat of English-
speaking countries. Sir John Macdon-
ald was a member of a number of gov-
ernments in Canada, but his longest
continuous( stretch of power was only
thirteen years, and io other Canadian
premier has ever held away continuously
for so long a term. In Great Britain,
Walpole served his country as Premier
from 1721 to 1742, 20 years and 10
months—the elder Pitt Was Premier
from 1783 to 1801, a period of 17 years
and 54 days; and the Earl of LIverpool
was head of the Government from 1812
to 1827—in all 14 years and 310 days—

WINNIPEG, Oct. 17.—Wheat shipments
are growing to enormous proportions. An
idea of the wheat traffic now passing
through the city over the C. P. R. for the
East will be given when it is stated that
yesterday 1,200 cars were asked from this
city by outlying stations in the west. It
would seem that an effort is being made to
send the whole crop to Fort William before
navigation closes. If it keeps up until
Dec. 1 and the boats are running tfil than
5,000,000 bushels will be moved east in the
next six weeks.
Fine weather has enabled all threshing to
be pushed forward, and as the elevators at
different points become filled there is con-
stant demand for shipment. It would re-
quire thrice the carrying capacity of the
0. P. R. to satisfy the present demands of
wheat shippers, but the railway company
is making a big effort to meet the emergen-
cies, 450 cars baying been sent. to stations
on Wednesday and yesterday.

Electricity, as applied by the

to suffering humanity. It is fast taking the
place of drugs in all nervous and rheumatic)

-RHEUMATISM
It is it well known fact that medical science
has utterly failed to afford relief in rheumatic
eases. We venturethe assertion that although
Electricity has only been in uso as a remedial
agent for a few years, 11 has cured more eases
of. Rheumatism than all other means com-
bined. Some of our leading physicians, recog-
nizing this fact, are availing themselves of this
most potent of nature's forces.
TO RESTORE MANHOOD
Thousands of people suffer from a variety of
nervous diseases, such as Seminal Weakness,
Impotency, Lost Manhood, Weak Back, etc.,
that the old modes of treatment Tanta CUM.
There is a loss of nerve force or power that
cannot be restored by medical treatment, and
any doctor who would try to accomplish this
by any kind of drugs Is practising a clangorous
form of charlatanism. Properly treated
THESE DISEASES CAN BE CURED
Electricity, as applied by the Owen Electric
Belt and Suspensory, will most assuredly do
so. It is the only known remedial agent that
will supply what is lacking, namely, nerve
force or power, impart) tone and vigor to tho
organs and arouse to healthy action the whole
nervous system.
BEWARE OF IMITATIONS
And the worthless, cheap, so-called Electric
Belts advertised by some concerns and peddled
through the country. They are electric in
name only, worthless as a curative power, and
dear at any price.
We Challenge the World to show an
