It is announced that with the beginning
of the next month the rate of interest upon
deposits in Canadian banks will be lowered
from 4 to 3i• per cent. The Monetary
Times,in commenting upon this.move says:
It is not to be wondered at, in view of the
great accumulation of money in the hands
of the tbanke.Tiaeir• total ,Saving Bank
deposits this year reach $103,000,000 as
compared with $12,000,000 a year ago.
The Times thinks it is quite in order for
the banks to reduce their interest rate. It
is to be hoped that the rule will work both
ways and that if our banks borrow cheaper
they will also lend cheaper.- "Let :the dis-
count rate go down a notch in company
with the rate of interest theylpay,
