LONDON – Nov. 10 was an exciting day
for Tim Bilcke, Shawn Morgan and
Brent Johns. They were members of the
Lucas Hammers who won the London
Minor football championship at Price
Waterhouse stadium at the
University of Western Ontario.
Although it is their first year of
football, according to coach Dan
Van Houtte “the South Huron boys
were definitely influential in the suc-
cess of the 2002 season. This team
made it to the finals three of the last five
years without a final win, but this was
definitely our best team. We were fortu-
nate to have these South Huron boys
come out.”
The team went undefeated (7-0)
through the regular season, won the
semi-finals and played the finals which
they won 32-12. They then played the
winner of the Windsor league, which
turned out to be Banting, defeating them
32-18.
Johns and Bilcke had many key tackles
in the defensive backfield, while Morgan
played on the offensive and defensive
lines and was the winner of the team’s
punt, pass and kick competition.
One of the highlights of this suc-
cessful and exciting season was
when the team was introduced on
the field of the SkyDome in the pre-
game activities for the Vanier Cup.

Sherwoods ran their sea-
son record to 9 wins and
1 loss by recording four

Nov. 15 the Sherwoods

defeating the Pirates 7-2.
Seven different players
shared the scoring for the
Sherwoods. Ben McCann,
Sean McCann, Mark Bell,
Les McGregor, Mike
Johnson, Dave Farquhar
and Chris McDonald all
scored for Hensall.
After a scoreless first
period, the Sherwoods
outscored the Pirates 3-1
in the second and 4-1 in

turned away 29 of the 31
shots fired his way.
Hensall finished with 56
shots on goal.
One night later the
Hensall team travelled to
Wingham to take on the
Spitfires and came home
with a 6-2 win. The
Sherwoods came out
strong in the first and
went to the dressing room
with a 4-0 lead.
Chris Kennedy had two
of the goals while Mike
Bowerman and Jarrett
Jeffrey had the others.
Wingham scored two
power play goals in three
minutes to cut the lead in
half early in the second.
Johnson added a power
play goal for Hensall to
make it 5-2 after two.
Chris Downie scored in
the first minute of the
third to put the game out
of reach. Rob Silver netted
three assists for Hensall.
The Sherwoods outshot
Wingham 45-38. Andy
Glavin had a good outing
in goal for the Sherwoods.
This past Saturday the
Sherwoods travelled to
Tavistock and came home
with a hard fought 5-4 vic-
tory.
Farquhar opened the
scoring for Hensall in the
first only to see the Royals
tie it up nineteen seconds
later. In the second
Tavistock scored two
goals in a minute and a
half to take a 3-1 lead.
The Sherwoods then
scored three goals in a
four minute span late in
the second making it 4-3
after two.
Andy Marshall, Scott
Phillips and McGregor had
the goals. Tavistock tied
the game up with thirteen
minutes left in the third
before Jeffrey got the
game winner for Hensall
with 12:08 left on the
clock.
The teams traded
chances the rest of the
way and the Sherwoods
hung on for the win.
Hensall outshot Tavistock
37-34 with Scott Wood
playing a strong game in
goal for Hensall.
Sunday afternoon in
Hensall the Sherwoods
put forth a strong team
effort in a 7-0 win over
the expansion Listowel
Jets.
Sean McCann and
Jeffrey scored in the first
as Hensall peppered 21
shots at the Jet goal. The
Sherwoods scored four
goals in the second out-
shooting Listowel 18-2.
McCann and Jeffrey each
fired their second of the
game, while Silver and
Johnson added one each.
Marshall had the lone
goal in the third and
Glavin turned away 20
shots for his second
shutout of the season.
The Sherwoods were
able to put a full lineup on
the ice for the first time
this season on Sunday for
their eighth straight win.
According to coach Randy
Parker, all parts of the
team are playing well.
All four lines are pro-
ducing, and the defence is
getting stronger each out-
ing, helping the goalies
lower their goals against
average to 2.49.
Next game for the
Sherwoods is Saturday
night in Hensall at
7:30p.m. against God-
erich. – Submitted article

BARRIE – The first snows have fall-
en across many parts of the province
and thousands of snowmobilers and
businesses are gearing up for a winter
typically worth about $1 billion to the
Ontario economy.
The Ontario Federation of
Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) officially
kicks off the 2003 snowmobiling sea-
son with Get Ready For Snowmobiling
Week, Nov. 25 to Dec. 1.
260 local snowmobile clubs are in
the process of preparing trails and
grooming equipment, although snow-
mobile trails remain closed for riding
and snowmobilers are advised to stay
off until trails are officially opened.
Get Ready For Snow– mobil-
ing Week is the OFSC’s way
of announcing the
start of its 36th sea-
son offering safe
family fun, and
outdoor recreation
to communities
across Ontario.
OFSC reminds everyone of
the preparations,
planning and pre-
cautions that must occur before riding
on OFSC prescribed trails.
Key pre-season actions include:
• perform sled inspection and main-
tenance.
• review owner and safety manuals
for your sled.
• perform trailer and tow vehicle
inspection and maintenance.
• install snow tires on tow vehicle.
• obtain valid sled insurance and
registration.
• assemble and stow emergency kits
on both tow vehicle and sleds.
• take a Snowmobile Driver Training
Course. (For information call 705-739-
7669)
Get Ready For Snow mobiling Week
marks the last chance for riders to
purchase a seasonal Snowmobile Trail
Permit for a fee of $140. After Dec. 1,
the seasonal fee becomes $170.
Throughout the winter, seven day
permits are available for $100 and
one day permits for $35. Permits are
sold at many retailers, snowmobile
dealers and hospitality businesses
throughout the snowbelt.
It is now the law in Ontario for
recreational sleds using OFSC pre-
scribed trails to display a valid snow-
mobile trail permit, subject to fines for
failure to comply (limited exemptions
may apply, check the regulations
for specifics).
OFSC reminds riders
snowmobiling is an off-road
activity, so they use OFSC
trails at their own risk.
Decide before you ride
to make smart choices
and take personal
responsibility for your actions, so
everyone can ride safer this winter.
The Ontario Federation of
Snowmobile Clubs is dedicated to pro-
viding strong leadership and support
to member clubs and volunteers. They
establish and maintain quality snow-
mobile trails to be used in a safe and
environmentally-responsible manner.
