POLICE BRIEFS
London woman airlifted
after car hits black ice
BLUEWATER – On Nov. 20 at 8 a.m. a blue 2001
Pontiac Sunfire was eastbound on Hwy. 3 east of
Varna near the intersection of
Bannockburn Line in Stanley.
As it descended the hill, the driver, Darinka Korosec,
28, of London, lost control due to black ice. The car
entered the north lane where it was struck broadside
by a westbound 2000 grey Oldsmobile Alero.
The car struck guardrails on a bridge abutment then
flipped down a steep embankment to the Bayfield
River.
Korosec was extricated from the car by the
Brucefield Fire Department and airlifted to Victoria
South Street Campus in London with serious abdomi-
nal injuries.
The other driver, Carol Bennewies, 51, of Hibbert
Twp. was treated for minor injuries and released from
Clinton Public Hospital.
Both cars were demolished.
Within minutes, another crash occurred further
west, on Hwy. 3 and Wildwood Line.
The driver of a black 1996 Ford pickup lost control
due to road conditions. Joseph Braun, 66, of the
Bayfield area suffered minor injuries after his truck
rolled several times in the south ditch.
He was also treated in Clinton hospital.
On Nov. 26, Korosec was reported in good condition
in London hospital.
Huron OPP reminds drivers as weather conditions
change to be especially wary of shaded areas and
bridges.
These sections freeze first and stay frozen long after
the sun has come up. The road ahead may appear to
be black and shiny asphalt but it could be covered with
a thin layer of ice.
Generally, in winter, asphalt has a grey/white colour,
so if you see black ice ahead, slow down. Be ready to
de-clutch or shift into neutral. If you must brake, do so
smoothly and gently.
