HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times-Advocate, 2002-11-20, Page 20GODERICH – The South Huron senior boys volley- ball team were so close to a trip to OFSAA they could taste it. On Nov. 15 the team travelled to Goderich Collegiate for the Double- A WOSSAA champi- onships. The tournament fea- tured the two Huron- Perth qualifiers, South Huron and St. Marys, against the two qualifiers from Thames Valley, Central Elgin from St. Thomas and College Ave. from Woodstock. The first match pitted the Panthers against Central Elgin. With good ball handling, consistent blocking and tough kills, South Huron took the match in 3 straight sets, showing the fans how an outstanding group of guys can play as a team, both on the court and on the bench. After lunch, South Huron faced St. Marys in the gold medal final in a bid to go to the OFSAA championships. The boys were down two sets in the best of three match, and rallied back to overcome St. Mary’s in the third set 27 to 25. A fourth set win by the Panthers set the tone for an exciting fifth set tie- breaker to 15. Fan support from South Huron was great as the boys tried their best to get ahead. However, in the end, they just could not get past the big St. Marys middle blocker. The final set score was 15 to 9 for St. Marys. This match was a huge milestone for South Huron District High School as it was the first time the senior boys have made it to the WOSSAA finals. Some of the key players were Kieran O’Rourke with huge kills at the net and a great sense of leadership on the court, team captain Mark Laye with consistently excellent effort in all areas, and Everette Dionne with huge jumps and big kills. Jon Brand came up with outstanding defense as the Libero (back court defensive specialist) and enthusiasm firing up the rest of the team. Justin Hayter and Jesse McCann both supplied great middle blocking and smart serves, while the other players on the bench really came through sup- porting the team. The following play- ers have been selected to represent South Huron in the Senior Boys Huron- Perth All-Star match, Nov. 27 at Mitchell District High School: Mark Laye, Kieran O’Rourke and Everette Dionne. Mr. Halpenny and Ms. Hone are proud all the team members. They worked very hard over the past few months and showed a lot of heart near the end when it counted the most. Congratulations on your silver medals boys! Sports Wednesday, November 20, 200220Exeter Times–Advocate Gaiser Kneale Ins. Broker Inc.
