4-H beef club members show at Royal
By Sandra Forster
TIMES-ADVOCATE STAFF
TORONTO – The only two South
Huron 4-H beef club members
showing at the Royal Agricultural
Winter Fair in Toronto are home.
Dan and Lana Shapton of Airport
Line are members of the
Brussels/Belgrave Beef Club. Only
three of the 20-member club
applied to go to the Royal. There is
no beef club in Exeter or Seaforth,
the next closest.
Both worked since February
training, washing and feeding their
beef calves in preparation for the
Royal. They took “farmer days” off
school to attend the Fair Nov. 6-9.
First show
Lana, 12, showed for her first
time at the Royal. The Grade 7 stu-
dent at Hensall Public School is in
her second year of 4-H.
She showed her calf ‘Buttercup’
at the Seaforth and Brussels Fairs.
Her Maine Anjou/Angus/Limousin
steer weighed in at 1,358 lbs at the
Royal.
Lana says preparing for the
Queen’s Guineas conformation
class was a lot of work washing,
blowing dry and maintaining stalls,
but it was exciting to be in the ring
competing. She hopes to compete
again next year.
City/country
Dan, 16, is a veteran showman.
This was his fourth year at the
Royal.
The Grade 11 student at South
Huron District High School was one
of the few to show a calf from his
own herd.
‘Twister’ was the third heaviest
steer at the Royal, weighing in at
1,510 lbs for the Maine
Anjou/Angus.
Dan enjoys showing at the Fair
and meeting a lot of people, espe-
cially seeing the reactions of bus
loads of city students with no expe-
rience of farm life.
He says showing at the Royal
requires a big time commitment of
days of “expensive work but it’s
worth it.”
Dan’s future plans include attend-
ing Ridgetown College and eventu-
ally owning his own cow-calf herd.
Both Shapton calves were sold at
the Fair. Dan was disappointed
with the low bidding price but has
already picked out the calf he’ll
train for next year.
He would like to see an Exeter 4-
H beef club with leaders closer to
home than Brussels or Belgrave.

Agriculture program coordinator wins award
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES-ADVOCATE
SEAFORTH — Ron Ritchie, co-ordinator of the inno-
vative Bridges to Agriculture program, received an
award from the Foundation for Rural Living on Oct.
29, at an annual conference about rural development
in Alliston.
Bridges to Agriculture was a shared initiative
between the Avon Maitland and Huron-Perth Catholic
school boards. It provided a unique chance for high
school students to study topics related to agriculture
in the classroom and on field trips, and also to spend
time working in agriculture or agriculture-related
jobs.
Start-up costs for the program were paid by a three-
year government grant, but as of this year the school
boards now have no money to operate it on a district-
wide basis. Now, its up to individual high schools to
fund their own Bridges to Agriculture-inspired pro-
grams.
Ritchie, who worked out of the Avon Maitland
board’s Seaforth offices, is now acting vice-principal
at Exeter Public School. Word of his award was
brought by South Huron trustee Randy Wagler during
the "Good News" section of the board’s regular meet-
ing, Nov. 12.
The Foundation for Rural Living is affiliated with the
Ontario Rural Council, which hosts the annual
Alliston conference.
The Foundation sponsors awards in eight cate-
gories, ranging from philanthropic activity to partner-
ships with business.
The awards "honour and celebrate all those who’ve
helped to keep our rural communities great (and) rec-
ognize the excellence of those who strive to keep the
vision of rural Ontario alive."
Bridges to Agriculture was nominated in the "Rural
Youth Achievement" category, along with four other
initiatives.
"I was very honoured to accept this award from such
a great cross-section of nominees," Ritchie wrote in
an e-mail to Wagler.Information from public
needed for sinkhole study
SOUTH HURON – The
Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
(ABCA) is looking for
public assistance to deter-
mine the location of any
known or potential sink-
holes.
A study in co-operation
with West Perth, Huron
East and the Ministry of
Environment will update
information on sinkhole
location to better under-
stand their susceptibility
to contamination from
municipal drains and sur-
face runoff.
Landowners can call
Peter MacDonald at ABCA
235-2610 with the loca-
tion, lot, concession,
ward, municipality, prop-
erty owner and contact
information.
