Sucking on zinc lozenges at the first sign of
a cold can help reduce the duration of the
cold. Look for those containing zinc
gluconate, zinc acetate or zinc citrate. Stop
using them when the cold is over. Zinc can hinder the
absorption of certain antibiotics.
If you are a smoker recovering from surgery or a serious wound,
you might want to use the event to stop smoking. Smoking
delays wound-healing probably due to the constriction of the
blood vessels in the skin and adversely affecting certain blood
components resulting in longer healing times. Another good
reason to stop.
As pharmacists, we are often asked to recommend something
to help sleep. One of the herbal remedies that has shown some
good results is valerian. It appears to work better in people who
haven’t received any previous drug therapy. As usual with most
herbal products, choose a reliable brand. We can help you with
this.
When putting eye drops in your eyes, pull down the lower eyelid
to form a pouch. Put the required dose in the pouch and keep
the eye closed for at least 30 seconds. At the same time,
gently apply pressure to the bridge of the nose at the corner of
the eye. This helps keep the medication in place longer.
