The Times-Advocate, 2002-11-13, Page 3GRAND BEND - In its
distinguished 31-year
history, the Huron
Country Playhouse in
Grand Bend has firmly
established itself as
one of the region's pre-
miere professional the-
atre organizations.
This past summer over
65,000 theatregoers
were entertained by a
winning combination of
charming musicals and
comedies on the main-
stage and intimate
Playhouse II venue.
Overall, Drayton
Entertainment enter-
tained 175,000 theatre-
goers in 2002 at its five
locations (the other
venues include the
Drayton Festival
Theatre in Drayton,
King's Wharf Theatre
in Penetanguishene,
and Schoolhouse
Theatre in St. Jacobs.)
The company is now
recognized as the third
largest summer theatre
festival in the province,
just after the Stratford
and Shaw Festivals.
Since merging with
award-winning
Drayton Entertainment
two years ago, the
nationally renowned
Huron Country
Playhouse has wit-
nessed a resurgence in
both artistic creativity
and attendance.
Alex Mustakas looks
forward to building on
this success and fur-
ther enhancing the the-
atre experience in
2003. To that end, he
has unveiled a truly
unique and diverse
playbill that will appeal
to theatregoers of all
ages.
"We look forward to
entertaining patrons
with our unique brand
of music and laughter
in 2003, and for many
more seasons to come,"
he says.
Tickets for the 2003
season went on sale
exclusively to members
Nov. 1. Members are
theatregoers who make
an annual contribution
to Huron Country
Playhouse in exchange
for several notable
privileges, including
advance booking
opportunities before
tickets go on sale to the
general public in the
new year.
"Many theatregoers
fail to realize that you
can become a member
at any time," says
Mustakas. "If you
don't want to wait until
the new year to receive
our 2003 brochure,
then I encourage you to
call the box office and
make a membership
contribution. This way
you can book the best
available seats before
tickets go on sale to the
general public!"
2003 Playbill
The thirteen-week
season begins with Big
River - The Adventures
of Huckleberry Finn.
This timeless adven-
ture will put a smile on
your face, a tear in
your eye, and a song in
your heart as the
Huron Country
Playhouse stage is
transformed into the
mighty Mississippi
River. With music and
lyrics by the legendary
Roger Miller, this
Broadway classic has
won 7 Tony Awards,
including "Best
Musical." This musical
masterpiece, which will
bring so many of Mark
Twain's classic charac-
ters to life, runs June
10 to June 28.
"Big River is the per-
fect show to launch the
season," says
Mustakas. "It has
everything - a fantastic
score, impressive set,
and unforgettable
story. It's a grand
musical that will work
wonderfully on the
grand stage of Huron
Country Playhouse."
The ties that bind -
and sometimes choke -
are explored with
uproarious results in
the heartwarming com-
edy, Over the River and
Through the Woods.
Two sets of aging
grandparents hatch an
offbeat scheme to stop
their favourite grand-
son from moving across
the country, with side-
splitting results. This
delightful comic gem
runs July 2 to 12.
From the legendary
team of Rodgers and
Hammerstein
(Oklahoma, South
Pacific, The King and I,
and The Sound of
Music) comes the
unforgettable produc-
tion Carousel, a power-
ful and riveting musical
masterpiece that is
widely considered to be
the famous duo's most
beautiful and enduring
work. Carousel runs
July 16 to August 2,
and has been crowned
by Time Magazine as
"Best Musical of the
20th Century!"
The season ends on a
high note, with Buddy -
The Buddy Holly Story.
This thrilling musical
pays tribute to the
golden age of music
through renditions of
Buddy Holly's greatest
hits - classics like
"Peggy Sue," "It's So
Easy," "That'll Be The
Day," and many more.
This smash-hit celebra-
tion runs August 6 to
30.
At the intimate
Playhouse II, Huron
Country Playhouse
looks to the future by
celebrating the past
with Vaudeville!, a lov-
ing salute to the glory
days of music and
laughter.
"Joyful, zany, and
completely entertain-
ing, Vaudeville! is the
perfect ticket for
unabashed fun," says
Mustakas. "Don't miss
it!"
Energetic tap-danc-
ing, corny comedy
sketches, powerful
singing, novelty acts,
and slapstick comedy
abound in this light-
ning-paced production
created by the leg-
endary Alan Lund.
Enjoy a broad sampling
of classic musical num-
bers from well-known
musical stars of the era
- Al Jolson, Eddie
Cantor, George M.
Cohan, Fanny Brice,
Judy Garland, and
many, many more.
Vaudeville! runs June
17 to August 23.
Special Student
Matinees
Special student mati-
nees of Big River will
be offered for school
groups at Huron
Country Playhouse.
Students will be able to
experience the wonder-
ful world of Mark
Twain through the eyes
of one of his most
beloved characters,
Huck Finn. The special
student performances
run May 26 to June 6.
Summer School
for the Performing
Arts
Plans are well under-
way for the Huron
Country Playhouse
Summer School For the
Performing Arts.
Youth between the
ages of 8 and 15 will
once again be able to
register for a week of
classes and workshops
designed to create and
enhance performing
arts skills. The
Summer School has
been a popular pro-
gram for the past 14
years and draws talent
from Southwestern
Ontario as well as
Northern Michigan.
Further details will be
announced in the new
year.
