Authority (ABCA) and Conservation Ontario will sit on
an advisory committee to protect drinking water
sources.
Premier Ernie Eves announced Oct. 29 his govern-
ment's commitment to watershed-based source pro-
tection as recommended by Justice O'Connor in his
Walkerton report.
The advisory committee includes conservation
authorities, municipalities,environmental stakeholders
and agricultural groups.
Conservation Ontario says source protection is the
first step towards safe drinking water, followed by
water treatment, water distribution systems, water
testing and certification/training.
Over 2 million rural residents do not have access to
treated water.
Conservation Ontario reports watershed manage-
ment tracks how much water is in the system, where it
comes from, who is using it, how it is being contami-
nated and where it is ends up.
“Surface and groundwater systems are linked and
have limited tolerance for stress. Long term problems
can develop due to the impact of human or natural
activities on our water and these can be very expen-
sive, or even impossible to treat,” says ABCA chairman
Bob Norris.

Truckers help local hospital
EXETER — South Huron Hospital
received some help from local truckers
last week.
The Guenther Tuckey Social Club visit-
ed the hospital and donated $1,216.16.
The club has offered social events for
area truckers for over 53 years.
Although because of changes in the
trucking industry many operators work
for brokers outside their community, the
truckers wanted the donated money to
stay local.
The club raised the money through
social events. The hospital will use the
money for patient care.
