TIMES-ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER – The Exeter and District
Ringette Association is almost ready to
hit the ice for its annual tournament at
the Exeter and Hensall arenas.
Organizer Michele Hodgert says 32
teams at 4 different levels will compete
in the tournament Nov.16 and 17. With
eight Novice, twelve Petite, eight Tween,
and four Belle, plus some Bunny games,
it will make for a full slate of ringette
action.
The tournament which was founded by
Ken Farquhar, has followed the same
format for several years. Teams play
either Saturday or Sunday, avoiding the
expense of travelling or staying
overnight. There is no gate charge, so
parents, relatives and friends can see
the girls play for free.
Each team will play three games and
results are determined by pools instead
of finals. In the event of ties, goal differ-
entials will be used to determine win-
ners.
Hodgert is in charge of fund-raising
and says it’s “right on target with 30
percent of the ice time taken care of.”
She added “local businesses have been
great with their support.”
Besides the business help, fund-raising
is done throughout the tournament with
penny tables and gift shops selling
ringette merchandise at both rinks, as
well as ring tosses between periods
The tournament is also the start of the
Great Ringette Giveaway, selling tickets
on a $2,000 travel voucher as the top
prize. It will be awarded at the Ringette
banquet April 18.
Along with the usual teams from Wat-
erloo,Tillsonburg, Stratford, Seaforth,
Han-over, and St Marys, Niagara Falls
will be entering for the first time this
year.
While the kids will be busy at the are-
nas, businesses will be open on Sunday
for parents, which is part of its appeal
as “a very homey tournament.”
According to Michele, the teams like the
tournament because “it gives them a
chance to bond early in the year, and
they come together afterwards as a
team.”
