Down pushes
for more
ethanol production
TORONTO – Hensall farmer and Ontario Corn
Producers’ Assocation director Bob Down wants
an increased corn market in Ontario through
ethanol fuel production.
Down is in favour of the Ontario Liberal’s
‘Clean Air Plan’ for all gasoline sold in Ontario
to contain at least five per cent clean-burning
ethanol by 2007 and 10 per cent by 2010.
But Agriculture Minister Helen Johns and the
Tory government defeated a Liberal resolution
in Queen’s Park Oct. 23.
The Plan would also see clean, renewable
biodiesel fuel developed.
Agriculture Critic MPP Steve Peters said Johns
doesn’t want a cleaner environment, more jobs
or an expanded market for Ontario farmers.
“You (Johns) owe Ontario corn and soybean
growers an apology for turning your back on
them,” Peters said in Question Period.
Down said the ethanol market would give
farmers a chance to grow more corn.
