Panther Girls win championship again
EXETER –The Panther
girls continued their
strong season winning
three games in the last
week and reclaiming the
field hockey crown.
Friday, the team opened
against Goderich and
jumped out to an early
lead with a goal at the
eight minute mark by
Megan Prszcator assisted
by Karly Pinder and
Leanne Cronyn.
The girls kept up the
attack but were unable to
build on their lead until
23 minutes of the second
half, Cronyn added a goal
to seal the victory at 2-0.
In the second game
against Mitchell, it was
more of the same with
South Huron dominating
but unable to finish.
Cronyn again led the
team opening the scoring
at minute 17 of the 1st
half.
Jenalyn Baker added
another to make it 2-0
but while Mitchell tried to
get back in it with a late
goal, they couldn’t get the
equalizer and the final
score was 2-1 for the
Panthers.

with a perfect 10-0 mark
to repeat as Huron-Perth

Tug of war trip to South Africa
By Pat Bolen
TIMES ADVOCATE STAFF
PRETORIA, SA – For
both the womens and
mens Bluewater tug of
war teams, their trip to
the world championships
in Pretoria, South Africa
was an experience to
remember.
For the two weeks from
Sept. 20 to Oct. 5, both
teams competed against
elite-level competitors
from 23 countries.
On the womens side,
captain Julia Burton led
her team to a bronze
medal in the 520 kg open
category class.
She described the
championships this year
as “the best ones yet” with
the meet being “very pro-
fessional and well orga-
nized.”
The opening ceromonies
featuring an hour of chil-
dren singing and dancing
for the first time at a
world championship.
With the championships
held further away than
they had ever been before,
Julia said it took a greater
amount of fund-raising
effort to make the trip.
Team members roofed
houses, held golf tourna-
ments and raffles, and
kept to their regular train-
ing schedule of three
nights a week, two hours a
night.
With six rookies on the
squad, Julia and three
others were the veterans
of the team, having been
to three other world
championships.
The sport is already big
in Europe, and the South
Africans are improving
rapidly, winning medals
for both the men’s and
women’s teams at the
championships.
It was not all work how-
ever, with time for the
teams to see some of the
country, visiting
Pilanesberg National Park
where they got a close
look at zebras, baboons
and lions, as well as visit-
ing area villages.
On the men’s team, cap-
tain Ted Hoffman said
they were slightly disap-
pointed with their results
because they were unable
to field their full squad.
When the date of the
tournament was changed
from the beginning of
September to the end,
three of his regulars were
unable to attend because
of farming committments.
Although replacements
were found from the
Northern Ireland and
Swedish teams, Ted felt
with a full team they could
have beaten the South
African team which took
the bronze. Bluewater
defeated them in 2000.
Held every two years,
the world championships
will be closer to home in
2004 at Rochester,
Minnesota, and on the
other side of the Atlantic
in 2006 in the
Netherlands.
Bluewater will see more
top-caliber tug-of-war
next year hosting an inter-
national tournament.
Their last one here was in
the summer of 2001.
Both teams are always
looking to recruit new tal-
ent and you can find out
more at the web site
