Teen corner
The “Me" Generation
It seems that since the 80's, or a little before,
teenagers have been giving the rest of society the
impression that we are all selfish . . . I don't blame
them for having this impression.
There are a huge combination of issues that can
lead to the conclusion that we teenagers are a little
self-centered. First of all, we all seem to lack the
general presence of an attention span. Teenagers
these days are products of a society obsessed with
technology. Our movies are the miracles of comput-
er-generated special effects, taking us to different
worlds in the blink of an eye. If you can't imagine
something, chances are, someone else can, and will
put it on film, or in a videogame for you to experi-
ence. Is it any wonder we are easily bored and dis-
enchanted by the normal happenings of the real
world?
Teenagers are the largest target market for
advertising corporations out there. These corpora-
tions appeal to the average teenager's need to fit in
with the crowd. We're often consumed by this
need, being so closely linked with others our age
through school, and feeling the
pressure of our peers to impress
the "social hierarchy". It's some-
thing that few of us understand,
but it's there none the less, and the
media is taking advantage of it.
Everything is geared towards the
individual, and emphasizes the
desire to be "cool." So, in addition
to having short attention spans,
we're also preoccupied with meet-
ing up with the media standards of
how a perfect teenager would look
and act.
These two issues, along with the fact that our
heroes tend to be wealthy sports figures (who are
usually needing more money for one obscure rea-
son or another), and famous actors, actresses and
musicians who make their living showing us "the
definition of cool", seems to have had an impres-
sion on the way teenagers have been acting for the
past few decades.
Not all teenagers are selfish, and it is unfair to
categorize us as such, but one thing that would
really solve the misunderstanding is if more teens
would make it known that they really are looking at
the bigger picture. Most of us do realize that there
are a lot more important things going on in the
world than those that have to do solely with our
social and academic lives, so let's start acting like
we really are the future leaders of this world. After
all, we are all the future has.
