Yes. Huron OPP says a minor can drink alcohol at their resi- dence. That is, only youth age 16- 17 under the supervision of the parent or legal guardian and not anyone else’s children, not even if the parents are present. A residence can be a home, cot- tage or even camp site . Remember only the child who lives at that home can drink. Last year, Chris Hadfield, one of the astronauts Hemingway trained, became the first Canadian to perform a space walk. Hemingway said humans will probably go to the moon again as well as Mars, the planet most like the Earth. It would take six to eight months to get to Mars and the team would stay on the planet for a year before making the long trek back. Hemingway has been with NASA for five years and hopes to go into space someday. He said the future of space travel includes tourism, space hotels and trips to the moon. “The future will be exciting,” Hemingway told the students. The United Way is largely dependant on volun- teers and Piluke is Huron County’s only United Way employee, so there are low administration costs. There are hundreds of United Way volun- teers in the county and the volunteer board of directors is chaired by Exeter’s Bruce Shaw. Piluke said the United Way’s mission is to improve the capacity of people to care about oth- ers. She admits there are many requests out there for donations, but with a donation to the United Way, you can be sure the money has been allocat- ed the best way, Piluke says. One of the United Way’s programs is Coats for Kids. The program sees the United Way collect coats, have them dry-cleaned, then distribute them to those who need them, including adults. The United Way also holds a ‘day of caring’ in May, in which teams of volunteers do service work in the community such as paint a fence, work in a garden, work in nursing homes or clear hiking trails. One of the United Way’s major fund-raisers is the grader pull in Goderich, which takes place Nov. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The pull includes antique and regular graders and raffles, face painting and balloons. The goal for the event is $30,000. Piluke hopes to wrap up this year’s fund-raising by mid-December. Once that happens, preparations for next year’s fund-raiser will start. While she has only been executive director for a few months, Piluke said she’s met many people and enjoys the position. “I’m loving it. It’s challenging, it’s a lot of work . . . but it’s a chance to make a change to do good.” Piluke said she appreciates the people who have already donated to the United Way. “We’re on our way,” she says.
