Fury finish season at .500
EXETER - The Exeter
Fury finished their season
this week on a high note
by winning two games at
home to make it back to
.500 for the year.
Exeter defeated St.
Columban Sunday 2-0
and beat Woodstock 4-0
Thursday night with
Nathan Holmes picking
up both shutouts.
In Thursday’s game
against Woodstock the
score was 0-0 at the half
before Exeter broke it
open against the short-
handed visiting team who
only dressed 10 players.
Marty DeBruyn gave
Exeter the lead as he
made an excellent rush
through the Woodstock
defense and beat the
keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after that goal
DeBruyn was at it again
as his crafty move against
a defender put him in
alone to make it 2-0.
DeBruyn completed the
natural hat-trick after
being set up by Matt
Strano who had a strong
game for the Fury. Strano
assisted on the last Fury
goal when he gave a nice
pass to Shawn McFalls
who buried the shot to
complete the scoring.
In the Fury’s last game
of the season against St.
Columban the game was
scoreless at the half once
again. Exeter had control
of the play but could not
finish any of their oppor-
tunities. The second half
of the game was much of
the same until Matt
Strano found a hole and
managed to place a shot
into the corner to give the
Fury the goal that they
needed. The game was in
the hands of Exeter’s
defense and they did their
job, turning away all chal-
lenges to their net.
DeBruyn notched his
league leading 30th goal
of the season as his left-
footed shot went just
under the bar to give him
his second consecutive
league scoring title.
“We finished the season
strong. Our defense was
outstanding the last half
of the season,” said Fury
spokesman Jason
McFalls. “Marty had
another amazing year
and Nathan was the back-
bone of our team coming
up with many key saves
for us. We are a bit disap-
pointed with our record
but we are optimistic
about next year,” added
McFalls.
The Fury ended the sea-
son with a record of 7-7-
04 for 25 points.
