EXETER - The past
week was a busy and
successful one for the
Panthers on the field
hockey pitch.
The South Huron
District High School
squad travelled to
Listowel Sept. 23 and
defeated the locals 3-0.
Just after six minutes
of play, Leanne Cronyn
found the net after an
exciting piece of passing
by Karly Pinder, Jillian
Koehler and Jenalyn
Baker. The score at the
half was 1-0, but 11
minutes into the half,
Shelby Musser tipped in
a hit by Brittany
Caldwell on a short cor-
ner.
Four minutes later,
Cronyn added her sec-
ond of the game as she
converted a Pinder free
hit.
Sept. 25 on home turf,
the Panthers were real-
ly flying with two
straight wins. In the
first game against St.
Anne’s,
Musser opened the
scoring after nine min-
utes as she finished
some fine play by Baker
and Cronyn. At 16 min-
utes Musser scored her
second goal of the game
on a Beth Hundey shot.
One minute later
Cronyn finished off a
Musser drive and at the
25 minute mark,
Brittney Foster scored
number four.
In the second half,
Cronyn scored again
with Musser and Baker
assisting. Rookie
Kristen Reschke netted
three goals at 18, 24
and 26 minutes and
Amber Caldwell round-
ed out the scoring for a
9-0 win.
In the second game
against St. Marys, the
Panthers were again
successful with Shelby
Musser scoring a hat-
trick. All three came
from beautifully execut-
ed deflections, with the
first coming after 14
minutes on a Cronyn
shot. After 20, Musser’s
deflection came from a
Pinder shot as did her
third after 15 minutes
of the second half.
“These two games
gave the rookies a great
opportunity to experi-
ence the game,” Pathers
coach Jim Workman
said. “Strong games
were played by the mid-
fielders, Jillian Koehler
and Beth Hundey.”
On Sept. 26, South
Huron travelled to
Toronto to the
Schoolgirls Tournament
and competed against
some top competition
and performed well. In
the first game, the
Panthers played
Mayfield from Peel
Region.
This team had a num-
ber of club players on
their roster, but the
Panthers more than
held their own. They
dominated for long
stretches, but missed
the net by inches on a
number of occasions.
“Many chances were
created, but goals
would not come,”
Workman said.
The defensive line of
Jaci Marshall, Brittany
Caldwell, Carrie Prout,
Susie McCann and
Megan Preszcator per-
formed superbly to stifle
the oppositon’s attacks.
Maria Dinney played a
strong aggressive game
in net to earn the
shutout.
In game two against
Assumption from
Oakville, the Panthers
again dominated a chip-
py game, but had the
same result as nothing
seemed to work around
the net. Again Dinney
recorded the shutout.
Things clicked in game
three against EC Drury
from Toronto. At the six
minute mark, Musser
opened the scoring as
she finished a Baker
pass.
Two minutes later,
Pinder converted a
penalty corner and after
12 minutes, Baker
scored her second goal
of her career. Cronyn
rounded out the scoring
at the 14 minute mark
to give the Panthers a 4-
0 win.
The South Huron plays
in Goderich Oct. 4 and
travels to Waterloo for
an invitational tourna-
ment the next day.
