ONTARIO – Residents are warned not to respond
to e-mails, phone calls, or web pages asking you to
call an (809) area code phone number.
The scam was identified by the National Fraud
Information Center.
You will get a message on your answering machine
or pager, asking you to call a number beginning with
the 809 area code for information about a family
member who has been ill, to tell you someone has
been arrested or died or you have won a wonderful
prize.
The calls cost $2,425 per-minute because the area
code is in the Dominican Republic and the 809 area
code is like a 900 number in the U.S.
Disregard any messages to call this area code. Don’t
make the call, because trying to fight the charges
afterwards can become a real nightmare. You’ll end
up dealing with a foreign company that argues they
have done nothing wrong if you made the call.
Beware of
phone scam
