New Bluewater councillor appointed
By Sandra Forster
TIMES-ADVOCATE STAFF
VARNA – Bluewater council appointed
Jim Fergusson of the Stanley Ward to fill
the Hay Ward council seat vacated by
Tony Denomme.
Council met Sept. 30 in the Stanley
complex and Fergusson took his place at
the council table for the meeting.
Council received letters of interest and
interviewed Fergusson, John Becker of
Dashwood, W.R. (Bill) MacDougall of
Hay, M.J. (Nick) Nicholls of Dashwood
and Michael Todoroff of Zurich.
Fergusson, who lives in Huston
Heights, sat on the Nutrient Management
Bylaw group and has experience in farm-
ing, heavy equipment and landscaping.
Other business
Counc. Mavis Govier thanked the more
than 200 volunteers from all Bluewater
wards for the great success of the Kenny
Rogers fund-raiser Sept. 21.
She added the afternoon entertainers
prove Bluewater is a “very talented
municipality”.
Council approved rezoning for the
Wally Gammage subdivision develop-
ment of Glitter Bay Estates in Stanley.
The 15-lot parcel is in an environmental-
ly-significant woodlot.
County planner Catherina Lisiak said “a
substantial amount of trees have already
been cleared to build McLean Rd.
To prevent more trees from being
removed, conditions include a maximum
lot coverage of 20 per cent. When the
development agreement was drawn up in
1990, provision on lot size included pri-
vate septic systems, but Gammage said
the lots can now be connected to munici-
pal sewer service.
In other business, the new Zurich cross-
ing guard is Jo Carney-Koloff.
Council voted not to sell or lease the 3-
4 acres of land under the Hensall com-
post building, despite a request by
Gregus Millwork of Lucan to use the
building for a cabinet-making shop.
Public works manager Ross Fisher said
the building was sold and was supposed
to have been removed years ago.
Fisher said the Ministry of the
Environment will likely require changes
to the landfill site certificate of approval,
site clean up and landfill gas monitoring.
B.M. Ross engineers estimate several
thousand dollars in costs. Fisher said
Bluewater will eventually have to decom-
mission the site.

Quit Smoking contest
HURON COUNTY —
Daily smokers in Huron
County who want to quit
smoking now have a great
incentive — the chance to
win a new car in the 2002
Quit Smoking Contest.
The province-wide con-
test is designed to help
smokers set a quit date,
prepare themselves
and then stop smok-
ing by Oct. 15 for at
least one month.
“It’s not easy to quit
smoking,” says
Sandra Feltz of the
Coalition For a
Smoke-Free Huron-
Perth. “It helps if you
are mentally ready
and you have sup-
ports in place for
when the going gets
tough.”
Participants have
about four weeks to
get ready and work
through the stages that
lead to successful quitting.
Feltz says a smoker who
wants to quit should start
by thinking about why
they smoke, why they
want to quit and how they
will cope with the urges
and pressures to smoke
after they have quit.
Contest participants are
required to enlist the help
of a non-smoking buddy
who will give them sup-
port along the way.
Buddies of confirmed
contest winners also win a
cash prize.
“The ways of quitting
are as varied as the peo-
ple who smoke,” says
Deedee Herman, execu-
tive director of
The Lung
Association,
Huron-Perth.
“We do know
that all smok-
ers go through five
stages to being
smoke-free —
having no thought
of quitting, think-
ing about quit-
ting, getting
ready to quit,
quitting and
becoming and
remaining smoke-
free. The goal of this con-
test is to provide incen-
tives to help smokers
move to the quitting stage
and then give them the
supports to help them
quit.”
The 2002 Quit Smoking
Contest is open to all
Ontario residents who are
daily smokers and are 19
years of age or older.
Entries must be received
by midnight, Oct. 15, and
smokers must quit smok-
ing by Oct. 15 and remain
smoke-free until Nov. 15
to qualify. The prizes
include a new Honda Civic
DX-G and seven Samsung
digital cameras.
“Everyone who enters
the contest and quits —
even if it’s only for a
month — comes out a
winner, whether or not
their name is selected in
the draw,” adds Feltz.
For more information
about the contest or for an
entry form, call the Huron
County Health Unit at
482-3416. Smokers can
also enter online at
www.quitsmokingontario.
