The Cents will finish second in the Western Ontario Soccer League’s First Division after a tough 2-1 loss to host Bluewater Friday night. The hard fought game for first place was played on a muddy field which arguably played into the home team’s advantage. Bluewater scored first in the 20 minute mark of the first half and took the 1-0 lead into the half. After numerous requests the game be replayed due to the shod- dy field conditions, the referee eventually deemed the field playable. The Cents took up the challenge in the second half by dominating Sarnia. Exeter’s Chris Pacifico found the equal- izer by burying a perfect 30-yard free kick in the far corner of the Bluewater net at the 60 minute mark. Bluewater grabbed the lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Exeter then threw every- thing they had at Sarnia but couldn’t buy another goal despite hitting two goalposts and a crossbar. “I am very proud of this Exeter team,” manager John Rasenberg said. “They really wanted to finish first. It wasn’t in the cards.” Exeter has a lock on second place and will be promoted to the Premier Division next season. This was the first loss for the Cents after a 14-game unbeaten streak that began after the team lost their first two games of the season. Exeter owns a 12-3-2 record with 38 points. Bluewater finishes their season at 14-2-2 and 44 points. If the Cents had won Friday’s game, they would have tied Bluewater with an identi- cal record but would have gotten the nod for first for winning their only head- to-head match-up. Simcoe sits in third at 9- 5-3 and 30 points and cannot catch Exeter even though they also have a game left. The fourth White Eagles could leap over Simcoe with two games left and an 9-5-3 record with 27 points. The tied for fifth Scottish and Croatia at 26 points could also make a move up the standings from their respective records of 8-6-2 and 7-4-5. Wallaceburg and the Athletics at 17 points are tied for seventh at 5-9-2 and 5-10-2 respectively. The Portuguese are sec- ond last at 4-12-1 and 13 points and the pointless season for the London Serbs continues as they have lost all of their 16 games to date. Exeter’s last game of the season is Friday in Delhi versus the Athletics. 19Exeter Times–Advocate Sports Wednesday, September 25, 2002 NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING RE PROPOSED CHANGES TO WARD BOUNDARIES AND COUNCIL COMPOSITION Mon.
