LISTOWEL — The golfing was more than good for the
Panther girls last week.
The South Huron District High School girls golf team
won the Huron-Perth Golf Tournament at Listowel Golf
and Country Club Sept. 19 with a winning combined
score of 286, 43 strokes better than the closest competi-
tion.
Karly Pinder led the girls with an excellent round of
44 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine. Pinder
also received individual honours for the lowest score.
Brittany Caldwell followed up with the next best score
and Kathleen Westerhout and new member Katie
Stewart also had good scores. The South Huron girls
have won this championship for three straight years.
The Panther boys also turned in a good score of 251
but were out of the running for the title. Listowel and
Stratford Northwestern were forced into a playoff
round with Listowel coming out on top. The South
Huron team of veterans Matt Dietrich, Cam Murray
and Cam Becker with rookie Mark Dietrich had good
games but the wind became a major factor on the unfa-
miliar course.
South Huron golf coach Casey Cook said the good
showing by both of his teams speaks well of the level of
competition in junior golf in this area.
“Many thanks to all the local courses and pros who
are doing a fantastic job at preparing these young peo-
ple for a lifetime of golf and also the possibility of earn-
ing educational scholarships.”

It’s almost picture per-
fect for the Exeter Jr. D
Hawks early on in the
2002-03 season.
The Hawks are unde-
feated so far this season
with a pair of road wins
on the weekend. On
Friday night the Hawks
started slow but finished
fine in a 5-1 win over
Mitchell. Eric Gelinas
scored twice for Exeter,
his second goal on a
shorthanded breakaway
midway through the third
period.
Jeremy Geoffrey, Nick
Regier and Shayne
Andrews also scored for
the Hawks with assists by
Joe Nesbitt, Daryl Bourne,
Jeff Finkbeiner, Bentley
Dundas, J.R. Davies, Matt
Vlemmix and Regier.
Scoring for Mitchell was
Jason Lepeloors.
The score was 1-1 after
the first period and 3-1
after the second. Exeter’s
first two goals came on
the power play which was
two for six for the game.
Mitchell’s power play was
zero for four. It was a
fast-paced game by two
quick skating teams.
Justin Hayter got the win
between the pipes for
Exeter with a solid,
steady game with Mitchell
outshooting Exeter 37-26.
Six different players
scored for Exeter in their
6-5 win in Parkhill over
North Middlesex
Sunday.
Finkbeiner,
Dundas,
Andrew Maver,
Andrews,
Regier and Jon
Keys scored for
Exeter with assists by
Geoffrey (2), Ryan
Abrams, Vlemmix,
Finkbeiner (2), Nick
Anstett, Davies, Jeremy
Vanbergen and Bourne.
Scoring for North
Middlesex were Ron
Poore, Chad Davis, Adam
Scaldwell, Jordan Ince
and Brian Dixon.
Exeter’s power play was
one for six and Parkhill’s
extra man attack was one
for four. Hawks goal-
tender Ryan Frayne
picked up the win and
Exeter outshot North
Middlesex 49-28.
It was a typically wild
game between the two
clubs as the teams com-
bined for eight goals in
the second period. The
score was 1-0 for Exeter
after the first
period and 5-4
for Exeter after
the second.
Hawks head
coach Dave
Revington likes
what he’s seen
so far this season but
admits there’s a lot of
work left to do as expect-
ed so early in the season.
“I like our goaltending,”
Revington said. “It has
been solid. Both guys
have played well.”
Exeter has several play-
ers who can generate
offence, as evident by the
first two high scoring
games, but the team’s
overall defensive cover-
age has to improve.
“Our play away from
the puck can get better,”
Revington said.
Mitchell and North
Middlesex are two teams
that work hard and hus-
tle, he said, meaning
teams like the Hawks
have to play their ‘A’
game at all times.
“If you stand around too
long they’ll beat you on
any given night,”
Revington said.
The Hawks feature sev-
eral returning players this
season and a few new
faces. The new guys are
Darcy McCutheon of
Walton, Nesbitt of
Seaforth (he played with
Wingham Jr. C last sea-
son), Abrams of London
(a Huron-Perth ‘AAA’
midget last year) and
Mike MacLean who is the
son of Hawks president

DORCHESTER — The
Panther senior boys v-
ballers were oh, so close
to a tournament champi-
onship Saturday.
The South Huron
District High School senior
boys volleyball team lost
the championship final
match of the Dorchester
Invitational tournament to
the host team 19-25, 28-
26 and 11-15.
“It was an exciting fin-
ish,” South Huron coach
Scott Halpenny said.
South Huron finished 4-
2 in the round-robin by
splitting two games with
both Dorchester and
Medway and sweeping
Ingersoll.
Standout players includ-
ed Mark Laye and
Everette Dionne for great
setting and hitting and
Kieran O’Rourke who was
strong at the net as mid-
dle.
The South Huron junior
squad didn’t fare as well
and finished last in their
tournament at
Dorchester. The host
team also won the junior
side by defeating Medway
in the final 25-21 and 25-
13. Ingersoll finished
third.
Halpenny said the senior
Panthers should do well in
the interlocking Huron-
Perth league this season.
“They’re looking good,”
he said. “They will be very
competitive.”
Four starters from last
season are back with the
Panthers. Halpenny is
carrying 14 players so
there will be a chance for
younger players to step
up.
Both South Huron teams
played their first regular
season games yesterday
after press at home
against Wingham F.E.
Madill and St. Marys. The
Panthers next travel to
Clinton Central Huron Oct.
1 to face the host teams
and Clinton St. Anne’s.
Yesterday’s games were
the only regular season
home action for the
Panther boys volleyball
teams.
