Weather doesn’t dampen spirit of fall fair

EXETER - Well, the rains finally came on Friday
afternoon and evening, but did not dampen the spirit of
the opening of the 148th Exeter Fall Fair.
MC Jennifer Denys introduced South Huron Mayor
Rob Morley; MPP Helen Johns, Minister of Agriculture;
Janet Cameron, District 8 Agricultural Director and
Betty Jerymn, District 8 Homecraft Director.
Jay Campbell, weatherman for the New PL, gave a
few words about the weather situation and his roots
here in Exeter. He officially opened the Fair. The pro-
gram for the evening consisted of the SHDHS Jazz
Band, Community Choir, Patti McCann and band,
Michelle Roy and Katie Anderson, Mitchell Dance
Studio and Zach Neil and Band.
The 2002 Exeter Fall Fair Ambassador is
Megan Preszcator representing Stedmans V&S
with runnersup Amy Shapton representing
Wayne Shapton Construction.
Jay Campbell presented the school awards
to Top Girl Justin Clarke with runnerup Jillian
Clark and Top Boy Andrew Hodgert and run-
nerup Richard Hern. The school section had
good exhibits.
Cathy Seip introduced the Champion Winners for
Homecraft: Culinary Arts - Sheila Miller, runnerup
Phylis Parsons; Youth Champion - Jessica Bray, run-
nerup Juanita Pfaff; Flowers - Marlene Glavin, run-
nerup Peggy Brownlee; Crafts and Hobbies - Rea
Greene and runnerup Laurie Bowman; Sewing -
Gladys Richardson, runnerup Ruth Squire.
Other winners were: Photography - Best print - Mary
Peterson; Second - Nancy Hartai and Third - Mary
Peterson. Viewers choice for fine art was Elisha
Martene.
Needlecraft Best of Show Quilt was Marian Pfaff and
second was Gladys Richardson.
Everyone enjoyed winning the door prizes and the
penny sale items.
The weather was great for the Saturday activities –
parade, Haflinger and Arabian Shows. In the Ag build-
ing was the sheep and goat show and displays of cattle
by Andrea and Mike Hern and a poultry display.
In the hall on Saturday there was lots of entertain-
ment and beef on a bun or pie in the Agricultural
Society food booth.
Scarecrow Competition: First, Cooper Family;
Second, Sam and Shelly Toornstra and family;
Third, Tammy and Jamie Eisler and family;
Fourth, Darleen Evans and family.
Everyone had a great time at the dance by
Vintage. Thanks to the Chamber of
Commerce.
On Sunday, the hall was again filled for
the community church service. Pastor
Vernon Dean led the service with Pastor
Peter Tuininga giving the sermon ‘Finding
what you have been looking for’.
Everyone enjoyed the special music and
refreshments were served after the service.
The offering received went to the Food Bank.
The Open Light horse show was on Sunday with good
attendance.
Everyone enjoyed the Midway for the weekend, win-
ning lots of prizes and having fun.
Thank you to all volunteers and to those who donated
prizes to make the fair a success. See you next year -
Sept. 19, 20 and 21.
