artistic beauty shown, which undoubt-

What might have terminated in a
serious accident happeneda little South
of the iron bridge here about half, past
elepen on Tuesday night last. It ap-
pears that Wm. Monteith, of Thames
Road, was driving home and had oc•
rasion to stop at the residence of Mr,
Thomas Ramsay, where his sister was
awaiting' him, aud while there a rig
came tip behind him driven by two
persons from Seaforth, Messrs Murray
and Chesney, at a break -neck speed,
and collided with his throwing all oc•
eupants out, smashing the rigs to
atoms, and the horses getting away.
The occupants were badly shaken up,
but nothing serious happened, although
it was a very miraculous escape. The
Soaforth parties will have to pay all
damages as they were driving furious.
During the past week Mr. Charles
Hobbs, hostler at the Mansion House
Exeter, has been busily engaged whit-
ening the' stable and shed, auddecorat-
ing all the, surroundings for the Fair
days, On Tuesday the buildings were
covered with small flags very tasteful
ly arranged and inithe evening lent-
crns were hung in conspicuous places,
which added much pleasure to the dif-
ferent parties hitching up their horses
when they thought; of going home. Mr,
Leathorne, the manager of the hotel,
hits felt the want of a man of this kind
for a long time and it is now fully be-
lieved that he has secured a person
who regards his interests es his own.
Mr. Hobbs appears .to be a man of much
taste and We believe that the farmers
visiting the village will find it to their
advantage to give him a call and see
the gentleman in his everyday toil.
Concert.
The concert given in the Opera
House on Tuesday evening was large
ly attended' and wasa. uccessin every
particular. The singing of the -Misses
Stevenson brought forth hearty ap-
plause from the audience, encores be
lug demanded after eseryrsong. This
is not their first appearance here and
each entertainment draws muoh larger
filled houses. Mr. Sim Fa,: of Wood-
stock, in his good-natured manner,
kept the people in merriment and glee
while rendering his many comic songs,
Proceeds: of the entertainment were
large.
Football.
A football match took place on the
grounds of the E•,eter,. . •-vin•g „..Parl:
on Tuesday morning betWeen4 club
from Lucan and a home team. At
about 11 o'clock time was called and
the two teams faced each other and
continued playing until:. about -12.80.
A very strong wind was blowing at
the time which made it hard wort: for
the men. They were 'very evenly
matched, for after battling with the
sphere for abort one hour and a half,
they decided to call it a draw. Anoth-
er'meeting, is expected iii the near fut-
