THE HORSE-SHOE SUPERSTETION.
It Prevails Among All Nations Where
Horses Exist.
Sailors are, for the most part, careful to
leave a horse-slaoe nailed to tba mizzen-
mast, or somewhere on the deok Lear 'mid.
ships, for the protection of the vessel. The
Chinese have their tombs built in the shape
of a horsashoe, which custom is very
curious, as it may be fairly regarded es a
brench of superstition long prevalent
emoug ourselves. The principal gateway
at Allababed is thickly studded with borse-
ahoes of every size end make. There are
'reieneiled all over the great
.aates, doubtless the offering of many a
wayfarer who has long since finished
his earthly pilgrimage. The saored
gates of Somnath, in the fort at Agra,
are eimilarly adorned. The practice re-
minds us of the old manorial rite at Oek-
ham, in Rutlandshire, Eng., where every
peer of the realm ia bound, the first time
he enters the town, to present a la orse-shoe
to be nsiled on the old portal, which is
welbeigh covered with these tributes. It
ie said tbat, in case any contumacious peer
should refuse to pay this tsx, the authori-
ties have a right to stop his carriage and
levy blackmail by unshoeing one of the
horses. To avert so serious an annoyance,
the tribute shoe is generally ready, Borne
being of thornaceas size and inscribed with
the name of the donor. Whether these
Eostern horse shoes were times or offerings
can not be told, but it certainly is very
curious to observe how widespread is the
superstition. -N. Y. Ledger.
