Municipal Elections.
The municipal election took place
here on Monday last, and was
very' strongly` contested by .the friends
of the different candidates, and all
worked energetically for their men.
Rigs could be seen hurrying to the
polls from 9 o'clock in the morning un-
til about 4 in the evening, when most
all the available votes were polled.
Never since Exeter was .incorporated
were there so many honor - seekers on.
the ballot paper as was this year and
all seemed deeply interested and anx-
ious to hold a position at the Council.
board for the ensuing year, save Mr.
L. Hardy, who, through neglect, did
not have his name `Withdrawn. from the
list of nominated candidates at the end
of the legal limited time, therefore his
name had to appear on the ballot. The

On Sunday evening last, fire broke
out in the Queen's Hotel stables. Eight
horses, four cows and a number of pigs
perished, and several buggies, sleighs.
and a quantity of harness was con-
sumed. The extreme heat from the
stable, which was close to the `brick
wall of the main building of the Queen's
Hotel. caused the frame work attached
inside to catch fire, which spread under
the roof and top story of the hotel. The
loss; -will be very heavy; cannot be esti,
plated at preseut.

Too late for last week
The tea sleeting held in this village
on Monday night. -proved a grand suc-
cess. Tea was served in the Templars
Hall. Short spiey speeches were de-
livered by the neighboring clergyman
and a lecture by Rev. J. T. Murry, of
Kincardine, on "My trip to Itlay in the
churches" was'heartily received. The
music by the choir was excellent. Pro
seeds $42. -The children's Christmas
Arch, held in Templar's Hall, on Tues
day evening, was also a success, of the
highest order. Tea was served first
and followed by dialogues, songs, etc.,
all of which were well rendered. -Xmas
passed of quietly here, as usual, foot

Charles, an adopted son of John
French, of Mitchell, while crossing the
riser here, fell into the water from the
ice and was drowned. The body has
not yet been recovered. He was a
very bright, smart boy about 13 years
old.
Another pioneer gone, in the person
of Thomas Riddle, after an illness of
six weeks. He was born 71
years ago
Irl Boxhoroshere, 'Scotland, and emi-
grated with his parents to Canada,
when: fourteen years old. He settled
in, the township of Beverly and lived
there until grown up. He then moved
to the township of Peel. About eigh-
teen years ago he moved to Warwick,
and about eight years - ago came to
Thedford. He waS very much respect-
ed by all who knew hint and leaves a
widow and five ehildren,'all grown up,
to mourn his loss, The funeral took
place at Thedford on New Year's Day
and was very largely attended by the
sorrowing relatives and friends of the
deceased,
