THE O tate*. SANDERS 4 SWEET, Props, " TK(IRSDAi Y NOV 20th} 1800. Supplement.) L.o)ta tted from 13irchall died with his lips sealed, but to avoid the possibility of a confession beim tortured out of certain portions of his autobiography he took stopsdur- ing the week to leave behind him a hist pretest ofcinlloceuce, Ile made out three similar letters, of, which the fol- lowing is a copy: WooDS'EOCIC SAIL "11aftar illy i' -oath there shallappear in the press, or in any other manner whatso- eter, any confescioxt that I had any hand in the n;tirder of Mr. F. This to be good throughout." RG. BincaALL, One of these was given to his guard George Perry, another was given to Turnkey Forbes, nude, third was placed - in the hands of leis friend Leetham. The last named document is the most. valuable if value can be attached to any statement of Birchall's-for it was intended for his wife, her family and his own. Leetllam react the letter to Mrs. Bircliall, tolling her at the same time that he had died with fortitude. She said this `information ivas ,some comfort in her cup of bitterness. -A. Startling Contradiction, To ae Editor of tate Advocate. DEAR SIR --There is an old adsge that says "a prophet is not witho honor Saye in his own country," a the saying is gerlera 11y accepted as c taiiiing much truth.' Indeed it is e paneled into the generally accepted`b lief that true merit, whether it be th of an individual, or that of some me ieinarjz'preparation is'much more lik ly to meet with popular approval at'' distance than "at 1:ome. Nasal Bairn as being the greate gene ),l* for cold in the head and ca t 1111i,ever offered the people of Canard a striking instance of, the faet that,: popular opinion, for once, at lea is wrong. From the outset its popular .ityin'the home of its manufacture ha been unbounded and constant]y in creasing. In evidence of this we of testimonials from two Brockville gentle men who are known throughout' th Doniniuu. D. Derbyshire, Esq., Mayor of Brock ville'mitt for the past two years Presi dent of the Ontario Creamery Associa tion, says, -"Your Nasal Balm is truly a wonderful remedy. I may say tha I vaaaadiicted with.a distressing cas of f,' arch, accompanied;by a numbe oats, disagreeable symptoms. I had Med, other remedies, but without avai 4{andd well-ni:gh dispiired of a cure, when I: st&ind icedto, give' Nasal Balms a tt, ' Its effects were wonderful, and th.eesults arising from its use surpris- ing. 'Briefly stated, 1.1 stops the drop- pings into the throat, sweetens the breath, relieves the headaches that fol - ow catarrh, and in fact makes one feel altogether like a new man. No one who is suffering from catarrh .in any of its steges should lose a moment in giv- ing this remedy a trial." James Smart, Esq., Brockville,Sheriff of the. United Counties of - Leeds and Grenville,"says:—"It would be :impos- sibleto speak too extravagantly of the wonderful curative properties of Nasal Balm. I suffered for upwards of a month from a severe cold in. the head, which,. despite., the use of other remed- 'gies, was becoming worse and develop- develop - Ing into eatarrh.; 1 procured a bottle of Nasal Bolin and was relieved f om the first application and thorougly cur- ed within twenty-four hours. I cheer- cheer - 111113 -cheer - 111113 -add my testimony; to the value of 'sal Balm-" These are but two illustrations out of the hundreds of testimonials the pro- prietors of Nasal Balm have had from ill parts of the. Rowley, of Yarmouth, Nova Mitia, talus writes to us:—The June No.. contained a most interesting amount of the, Trivitt ilteniorial Ghureh. in Exeter, eter, Ont, witli a short biograph- ical sketch of the, donors. The church has always been a land -mark :of progress and refinement, Strangers and visit ors to the old country often speak and write of the peculiar sort of charm which the old churches and rectories, with their associations running baek into the distant past, seem to impart to village life and its surroundings. This same feeling in time to come will invest the churches of Canada. Some of the older towns of Canada are ab ready assuming antiquarian interest, chiefly in connection with their church- es and colleges, and the efforts ,of the early settlers to provide themselves with the first requirements' of social and civilized life: One likes to hear of the record of an old family, and every one of us likes to trace back the lives of our inheritance, but it is not, every- body body who can say as Mr. Trivitt can "that his ancestor' carne over with the Conqueror." I have a f a simile copy py of the roll of Battle Abbey, containing the names of the Knightss and Earls who fought for Duke William at Hast- ings, tog'etlier with au alphabetical IthI of the "Esquires" and "men at aims ' and among these latter the name .2't - z!et is found, anglicised by the changes and chances of time into: Trivitt as now spelled. Perhaps in one -hundred Sears from now Canada will have in most of her country towns, and villages many such; beautiful churches as the Trivitt Memorial Church, Let us hope so. Who will; follow in his train? - Canadian Church Magazine. Varna. Mr. John Diehl. of the Northwest, is visiting in this vicinity. Mr. Alex. Foster has moved into his new house on the west side of Varna. Mr. Purdy has removed into the house recently occupied by Rev. Mr. McConnelland family. Mr., and Mrs. Peebles have returned from their honeymoon trip, and are at the lady's paternal residence. Mr. John Reith has sold the 80 acre. lot 24, lake road west, Stanley, to the Messrs. Overholt of Hay for $3,200. Mr. Reith will go to Saginaw. One of the old settlers, Mr.. James McIver, a bachelor about 80 years of age, died on the Babylon line about 2 miles from here on Sunday night or Monday morning, having passed away so quietly that his brother who lived with him did not know that he was dead until morning.., Burial in Bay- field cemetery Wednesday. Residents here was much' surprised and grieved last Friday* to learn of the death of Mrs. L. Beattie in the prime of life, beloved and respected by all who value the dignity of womanhood. She was a daughter of the late R. Speck - man, of the Sauble Line. The funeral,. which was the largest ever seen in Bayfield, took place to the Bayfield cemetery last Sunday, the procession - being made up of about 140 vehicles and occupants, thus in some measure testifying to the worth of the deceased. A sermon was preached in St. John's church by the Rev. Mr. Newton, the edifice being. draped in mourning. The deceased was about 33 years old and leaves, besides her husband, one. child less than a year old, She was only ailing from the Sunday previous and had never taken to her bed. On Friday she was about the house and on her husband returning from the stable he found her speechless; she died about twenty-five minutes afterward. Her disease assumed a form of apolexy, superinditeed'it is strongly surmised from certain scandalous statements made concerning her family and about which she seemed to worry a good deal: Hensalb SHOOTING MATCH. -The pigeon and glass ball shooting match given by Mr. Ed Bossenberry on Saturday last was not a success owing to the small num- ber of sports present. The day was fine but a strong, wind blew from the west which made the' birds difficult to shoot as they were carried away in an instant by the breeze. Six was the highest score, made by Mr. R.
