AFTERNOON SESSION.
The Association met as pee adjourn-
ment. The minutes of morning session
were read aturztpproved.
It was arreecl to take; up the 'first
subject on the progi.ain. The Secretary,
G. W. Holman, then proceeded. to address
the aSsociation on the importance .0f
teaching History and Geography to-
gether so far as neeessary to give the
pupils a thorough knowledge of the
subject. Chronology should. form an
important factor in history lessons.
Further discussion was adjourned to
allow G. M. Kilty to take up Reading
for Part I, Which he did in a very able
manner. A class of small boys and
girls had been sent up from one of the
Ward schools of the town to afford Mr.
Kitty a full opportunity to exemplify
his method of teaching the little ones
their initial lessons.
Inspector Tont then took up Reading
for Part II, dealing mostly with word
making. This proved a very interest-
ing lesson. The class was well conduct-
ed and the. children showed great skill
in analysing the sounds of words and
sylables. The discussion on this sub-
ject was further continued by the Pres--
ident and. Mr. R. E. Brown.
The Inspector then read the'report of
the School Committee of the County
Council agreeing to pay the cost of
printing the examination papers requir-
M for promotion from 5th to 6th classes,
and also to provide suitable diplomas
for those who succeed in passing such
examination.
On motion of G. W. Holman, second
ed by J. A. Dempsey, the report was
referred to the Resolution Committee
to report as soon as possible.
The President appointed Messrs. R. E.
Brown and M. Lockhart as additional
members of the Resolution Committee,
On motion it was decided to elect five
members of this association to assist the
Inspector in preparing papers for pro-
motion examinations, by ballot a,nd at
the same time other officers are elected.
J. W, Hogarth resumed the adjourn
ed discussion on History and read an
able and interestingpaper on Sociology
as a branch of this subject. Ftirther
discussion on the subject was postponed.
It was decided en motion of W. H.
Johnston, seconded by R. E Brown, to
supply members of the Association with
a choice of any two periodicals on the
clubbing list at one.half the club rates.
Mr. W. H. Johnston, who introduced
he discussion on the next topic, viz: -
"Fifth Class in Public Sehools," favored
the rrtaintenanee of the class in the
public schools, as it would aid both
teachere aud plipilS in pursuing the
higher studies prescribed for such a
class.
Mr. Geo. Sheppard pleaded also foe
the fifth cl ASS to be retained, as it would
eonfer a great boon on children who
for various masons coulcl not attend
higher places of learning.
Me Thos. G. Alice also fa cored the
retention of the elites, lent ineetd tha
too much attention should not be de
voted to the same, especially whcr
there is a large, attendance of Snlalhir
pupils, 'The tiiicussion was furthe
-continued by Messrs. H. I. Strang, R. E.
Beckett, M. Lockhart, Robt. Parke and
others. • • •
It eves resolved on 'motion of G. W.
