The Picnic, which was held on Fri-
day proved a grand success. The foot-

Mr. Thos. Hodgins, our genial hotel -
keeper, has traded drills old favorite
pony, Jimmy, to Mr. R. Lang, of Exeter.,
We arc pleased to see Mr. Samuel
Hicks sr., ,who has been confined to the
bed during the past eight years with
paralysis of the legs, able to"be out and
about again.
Rev. G. H. Thompson who has labor -f
ed among us for the past two years is
taking his departure to Bryanstan.
We wish him everysuccess in his new
field of labor. His successor is the Rev.
Mr. Allan.
While Mr. James Hicks was teaming
gravel for road purposes, his horses
took fright from some unaccountable
circumstance and rah away. Mr.
Hicks in an attempt to secure the lines
was thrown over upon the tongue of
the wagon and from there under the
horses feet. Besides receiving a severe
shaking up, he sustained a fraction of
two of his ribs. The marvel is he was
not killed.
Biddulph.
We regret to hear of the severe ill-
ness of Mr. Geo. Hodgins, of the 3rd
con. of Biddulph, who isnot expected to
ecover.
It is with feelings of regret we chron-
icle the death of an old and respected
pioneer in the person of Mrs. Porte,
which sad and inelaneholy event took
place on Thursday the 19th inst. She
was about.84 years of age at the time
of her death. Her remains were into':
red in the Catholic Cemetery,Biddulph,

this year. The managers are arranga_
ing for ascensions and drops from the
clouds by both men and women. They
also expect to exhibit the exciting no',
yelty of a balloon race between • men
and *Omen, the struggle beingnot

est, but who shall drop from the most
fearful height and which one shall fall
through the air with the most appal-
ling speed. The managers expect to
secure the services of several of the
most daring, skillful and highly train-
ed male and female aeronauts of Eur-
ope and America, and can safely pro-
mise a series of the most thrilling per
formances ever witnessed anywhere in

On Sunday evening last Bev. C. Flet-
cher assisted by Rev. W. Penhall con-
cluded public service in behalf of 'the
Indepeudent Order of Foresters of this
place, there were a large number of the
Brethren from Courts, Wa,bui Summer -
vale and Woodham were present; al-
together th o affair was new in these
parts and a large number from all
parts turned out to witness the proces-
sion. There were abont 70 Foresters
present. The text chosen for the occa-
sion will be found in the 13th -chapter
of Romans and.Sth ,verse, Owe no man
anything, but love oue another, etc.

conclusively that he (Elliott) pulled
her by the hale of the head, belted her

go to the house. One of the Clinton
law fraternity appeared on behalf of
the, defendant aud a rather curious in-
cident to?k place: as the lawyer want
ed one of the witnesses to show him
correctly how Elliott pulled ' the girls
hair, when the magistrate suggested
that the witness go through the per-
formance on the lawyers head; but to
the astonishment of the witness when
he went to do so he found nothing but
a "skating rink," and a titter Went
around the room much to the discom-
fort of the bold -headed lawyer.

The following communication from
the county treasurer was read and re-
ferred to the finance committee: -
TREASURER'S STATEMENT.
GENTLEMEN:—I submit herewith the
usual statement of collections from non-
resident lands for the portion of the
year ending April BOth, and of cash on
hand andkavailable to meet current
expenditure. I have to report that
since the first of the year I have loan-
ed on first mortgages at 6 per cent.
$15,250.00. Of this amount nearly $8,
000 was taken from funds foe current
expenditure, the sinking fund account
being exhausted. This money was
lying in the bank at 3 per cent. and
will in all probability will be restorted
before needed. I have also to request
that you grant to your warden and
myse:f the usual power to borrow $25,-
000 to meet expenditure -until the tax-
es.are paid in. I am, gentlemen, your

confined in the gaol seven prisoners
six males and one female. The lattea,
Mary Brady, has been repeatedly re-
ported to you. She is from McKillop
township, and was committed from
there as a vagrant and has been re -1
committed for the eighth time by Mayor
Butler, of Goderich, She is weak-
minded, has no friends as far as we know
know, and is a fit subject for a house • Ar
of refuge. Of the males two are vag-
rants, one Wm. McInnis, committed by' ti151,,
Mayor Butler for sixty days, the other
Charles Andrews, committed by WEB.
Lewis, and. Charles Brown of the town ,
