The Wayne circuit court of De-
triothas granted.Oharles E, Mann
a divorce from Jus wife on tire
ground of adultery. , Mr. Mann is a
young Englishman, whose, language
and address bespoke him, a, man of
education and refinement.* Mr»
Mann testified that in the early-part
of 1882 lie left Forest Hill, Kent
county, England, where heliad, lived,
happily with his wife for ten years.
On reaching Canada lie settled down
in Galt in-the employ of the Grand
Trank, railway. In June of the same
year his wife followed him, and they
lived together at Gal tat the residence
of Janies Curtis. The latter, before a
commission appointed' to take Ilin
testimony, stated that about two
weeks after Mrs. ManiFsniTrival one
evening she-was discovered tearing a
letter received ’ that day into frag-4
ments. These she LlireW in the
backyard- Her husband -seized the.
opportunity to reclain the pieces,
then pasted them together, - when
their blotted surface revealed the
ruin of his wife .accomplished l>y a
man who signed himself “Tom
Dayid,” a civil engineer. The letter
accompanys the. testimony,' and is
dated; Winnipeg, July 13, 1882. It
is addressed.to ‘My..very dear Polly,’
and advises her to leave her biutoof
a husband, and “we will saddle our-
horses together.” After the discov
ery of the letter she left lier husband
and..was trace/l to a house of assign

ficer Hugh Bell,of the police force of
thia city, and of the mother of Capt.

first gift in the way of children to

and the parents were aa much de*
lighted ss surprised. Two or three,
years later twins came again, to
bless the household, and tlie hap
piness was increased accordingly.
The second Recurrence created aome
comment among the friends of the
family, but their reputation did not
become widespread until,- in the
course of time, a trio, of fat, healthy
babies came rollicking into the
world. Then the Bells became Jam-,
oua, and throughout the Dominion
their praises weie siuig. The town
of Port Robinson, the people in it,
and tha jiitizens in many parts of
Canada made up purses or sent
valuable presents to thejiappy and
prolific couple. In time their fame
spread - to England and reached the
earfi. of the Queen. Her Majesty
’’testified her appreciation of this
rapid increase in the number of her
eubjects . by sending substantial
presents of- money and valuables.
These nunierous gifts placed Mr.-and
Mrs, Bell and their children far
above wane, and in their case at
least came wealth' with their child
ren, They invested their money
safely, and in a short time were
quite wealthy, but Mr. Bell did not
liyFlong to enjoy his good fortune,
dying-befote another increase in the
family came. Mrs, Bell did not wear
Jier robes of'mourning long.’ She was
an attractive lady* had nolaclc of
admirers and suitors,-and’ in-time
listened to “Hie wooi.ngs of a French’*
man of good family, and again as-,
sumed the ties of wifehood. The
first interesting, domestic evept
which followed this .union was the
birth of four babies in a bunch, well-
developed, hearty youngsters, evenly
divided as to sex.- Tlie. father did
not long survive this unexpected aud
very extraordinary event, and-after
his death. the mother with her, in
teresting fainily came to—the States,.
settling in Philadelphia andsafter-
? wardsremoving to Washington, D,C.,
wliere she resided up to the time of
her. death, less than, two years ago;
Her. surviving children remain in
Washington and all but two have
"'married. They are” all thrifty.,
