Recipes to put you in the spirit of the season
It’s winter and that means another
weekend spent indoors, dodging the
cold and watching the snow fall.
But the wintery weather offers an
ideal opportunity to put your
cooking skills into action - in the
form of cookies. Bake up a dozen
with the kids, treat colleagues, serve
them at a party, or mail a batch to
distant loved ones.
And, of course, indulge in them
yourself!
These Snowflake Brownie
Diamonds and Frosty Snowmen
from The Christmas Cookie Deck;
(Chronicle Books), are sure to put
you in the spirit of the season. You’ll
have so much fun making them that
you won’t mind spending time in the
kitchen.
SNOWFLAKE BROWNIE
DIAMONDS
Makes about 3 dozen
2 tablespoons instant-coffee
powder
2 tablespoons hot water
5 ounces bittersweet or semisweet
chocolate, coarsely chopped
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons
unsalted butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup ground toasted almonds or
skinned, toasted hazelnuts
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
powder
4 eggs
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Sugar Topping:
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
powder
Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease 9-

a double boiler, combine coffee
powder, water, chocolate and butter.
Place over hot water and heat until
melted, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat. In a bowl, stir
together flour, nuts and cocoa. In a
large bowl, beat eggs until light.
Beat in granulated sugar and vanilla.
Stir in chocolate mixture and flour
mixture. Spread in prepared pan.
Bake for 22 to 25 minutes or just
until set. Transfer to a rack and let
cool.
To make sugar topping, place
powdered sugar and cocoa in a sieve
and dust the tops of uncut brownies.
Cut into 11/2-inch diamonds.

Christmas Season

With the holidays here, your
calendar is likely filling up with
countless social events. Knowing
what to wear to each function can
become challenging.
While you don’t want to go out
and buy a new wardrobe, you still
want to make sure you look your
best.
It’s also likely you’ll want to be
dressed appropriately, whether it’s
for a business function, a formal
event at a ballroom, a casual dinner
at a restaurant, or a laid-back meal at
a friend’s house.
It’s best to buy a few key pieces
that can be mixed and matched and
dressed up or down, depending on
the function. Here are some ideas on
how to be the belle of the ball.
1 Evening separates designed in
luxurious fabrics such as silks, satins
or velvets are good choices. For
example, a velvet mock turtleneck
can be dressed up or down. For
casual nights, it provides instant chic
and creates a long, lean look over
jeans and loafers.
For more formal events, wear it
with a long, flowing skirt and satin
pumps, which give it an elegant and
sophisticated look. Velveteen jeans
are great to wear when celebrating at
your own or someone else’s home.
They offer a sporty and
uncomplicated look for day or night,
yet provide more polish than
traditional denim.
For a dressier look, wear slim
velvet pants with velvet ballet flats.
2. A silk charmeuse shirt can
easily transition from a simple,
daytime outfit to an elegant blouse
for the evening. Wear it during the
day with a classic suit, or transform
it into dinner party attire by
accessorizing with a silk scarf, a
satin handbag, or a favourite piece of
jewellery.
3. Knitwear pieces like metallic
twin sets or beaded cardigans are all-
time favorites for holiday parties.
They can transition from daywear at
the office into eveningwear at a
social engagement. With their rich
texture and visual interest, these
elegant jacket alternatives make any
