CREATE YOUR OWN
OUTDOOR WINTER
PLANTER
(Luann’s Country Flowers)
1. Start with a flowerpot or urn.
Fill it with dirt from your summer
planters or wet oasis which can be
purchased at a florist.
Make sure the oasis is well soaked
and the planter full because you
want something for the stems to
stick in to.
(Note: Oasis cannot be kept from
year to year)
2. Secure oasis with duct tape, or if
your pot is plastic, puncture holes in
the side and tie it down with string.
3. Gather an assortment of winter
greens (ie: spruce, pine, cedar and
dogwood) to achieve different tones
and texture. British Columbian cedar
which you can probably find at your
florist, is a more vibrant than the
cedars grown here and holds up
better.
Long-needled pine has a nice flow
to it and can help add height which
makes the arrangement. Cedar has a
wonderful scent and red dogwood
adds accent.
4. Keeping in mind that your
arrangement should be two and a
half times the pot size, begin to place
greens so they appear to start in the
centre then shape out.
Beginning with a fairly straight
stem to mark the centre with helps
achieve this.
As you fill in, try to make sure the
width is at least the width of the pot
on each side.
The most important step to a
beautiful arrangement is to create
that angle in coming out so the
arrangement is not straight up and
down.
5. If dogwood isn’t available,
another accent option for accent is
ting ting, a natural twig covered in
glitter which comes in all kinds of
colours and is available at your
florist’s.
6. The fullness of the planter is a
matter of taste, but make sure it’s
even without any gaps or areas of
heaviness.
7. Accessorize with bows (use
outdoor ribbon) Christmas accents
such as stars or balls, pine cones and
branches of berries.
8. Place outdoors and enjoy. The
planter should last almost through
the season and accents can be
changed to suit this. It may need
occasional watering if there isn’t
much snowfall.
