Chanukah rooted in symbolism
Chanukah is a festive Jewish
holiday rooted in symbolism. It is
celebrated for eight days and nights
on the 25 th day of the Hebrew month
of Kislev (which falls in November
or December on traditional
calendars).
Jt commemorates the rededication
of the holy temple in Jerusalem,
Israel. The Jews recaptured their
temple after it had been seized by the
Greek-Syrians
They were happy to reclaim their
temple, but saddened that it was in a
disarray. After it was cleaned and
repaired, they wanted to host a
dedication ceremony and light their
menorah, an oil-burning lamp. But
they could only find enough oil for
it to bum for a day.
Miraculously, the oil kept the
menorah burning for eight days,
enough time for them to find more
oil.
