(Bonnie Gropp photo) Lighting the way a festive table for Christmas By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor Decorating for the seasons is a matter of course for floral designer Aggie ten Pas. And part of Christmas is finding easy, fun ways to set a festive table. For those who like transforming the simple into the unique, ten Pas suggests using toilet paper rolls as napkin holders. Take decorated cord rope, available at any hobby store or department, and glue it around the roll. Then in the centre of the top, fasten little cones, greens or small ornaments. Slid the napkin through and place on the plate for a fun holiday look. Another quick, but decorative touch for you table is a simple grouping of three pointsettias in the centre. Place evergreen boughs as a runner down the centre of the table. Then using an odd number of wine glasses run them along the greenery. Put a tea light in each glass. “Good use of candles makes anything look festive,” said ten Pas. Another favourite touch is pine cones. “You can do wonders with pine cones,” she said. For example, place a taper candle amidst the greens, add two pines cones on either side then embellish with some personal touches such as ornaments or pointsettias. Christmas dishes are a must, said ten Pas who owns four sets of different dishes. But they needn’t be ones you can’t use at either times of the year. “Plain white is striking with gold or red charger plates.” Simple touches add Christmas colour to a table. For example green and red foil wrapped chocolate at every place setting is not only festive to look at, but a treat for each guest. Using tree ornaments to tie around napkins is also a simple way to decorate your holiday table. FRESH GREEN WREATH 1. Begin with a wreath, which can be purchased at your florist, or if you’re more adventurous, create your own using a variey of greens. 2. Purchase a bow from your craft store or florist made of outdoor ribbon. Or purchase the ribbon and make your own. Place it on the side, top or bottom, depending on the look you like. 3. Dress up the wreath with ornaments, little birds, cones, anything that you like. Many of these items can be purchased inexpensively. 4. Use an odd number in your groupings and play with it to see what you like before affixing anything permanently. 5. There are a variety of ways you can dress up a wreath, from flowers, to stringing a ribbon through. The important thing is to not overdo. “Simple is usually nicer,” says ten gRS Happy holidays to all our customers Uj Sudy ftaiuubuttnat <£ (Lew&ic W&ikeut c BRUSSELS b To All Our Valued Customers: Thank you for your Business!
