In loving memory of our dear mom, Mary Lowe, who passed away one year ago on December 27, 2004 at her favourite time of year. MY FIRST CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights, like heaven’s stars, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing, I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart. So be happy for me, dear ones. You know I hold you dear, And be glad I’m spending Christmas, with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory, of my undying love. After all “love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings or love, he has for each of you. So, have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear, Remember I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. - Dearly loved and never forgotten by Wayne and Hope, Murray and Ruth, Jim and Ann, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 50-1 Learn how to talk to others about their smoking <fcsmokers'HEiPLiNE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY TOLL-FREE 1-877-513-5333 NOTICE TO CREDITORS ALL PERSONS having claims against the Estate of CLARA SOPHIA PERRIE, deceased, late of the Municipality of Huron East, Township of Grey, in the County of Huron, who died on August 15, 2005, are required to file full proof of same with the undersigned on or before the 12th day of January, 2006, after which date the Estate will be distributed having regard only to those claims of which notice has been received. (Heather Crawford photo) The hidden meanings behind those 12 days Ask most people to recite The 12 Days of Christmas, and chances are you’ll find a significant number of people who can actually name most, if not all, 12 verses. A frequently played Christmas song, it’s been heard by nearly everyone, or several hundred times. But though many of us can quote the lyrics, far fewer people are likely to know the meaning behind the 12 days. To begin, the 12 days of Christmas have to do with the differences in the days various cultures celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Though many assume the 12 days refers to the days prior to Dec. 25 (when those in the Western hemisphere celebrate Christmas), it actually refers to the days between Dec. 25 and the the beginning of the Epiphany on Jan. 6. The Epiphany (also known as “Little Christmas”) is recognized as the day the Three Magi arrived with gifts for Baby Jesus. As for each individual day and what each gift symbolizes, Jhe The storytelling continues Continued from page 19 redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.” (Galatians 4:4f) To those burdened by legalism or slavery through the centuries, Christ’s coming as God’s freeing agent has brought a breath of fresh air — Iron Curtains notwithstanding. Around 1200 A.D., when the language of the liturgy disguised much of Christianity’s meaning from the masses, Saint Francis of Assisi and his associates set up “living nativities” so common people could understand better the story of Jesus’ birth. Still today we see many “manger scenes” inside and outside homes carrying on this teaching technique. In the early 1600s, long before Canada became a nation, Jesuit largely ciyptic connotation of each gift dates back to the times when Catholics were not allowed to openly or even privately celebrate their religion in England. Therefore, as a means to both celebrate and pass' on their religious beliefs to their children, Catholics began singing The 12 flays of Christmas, with each gift bearing some religious significance. According to Catholic Online, a Web site devoted to providing Catholics with information pertaining to the origins, practices and issues regarding their faith, the song is a reflection of the love between Catholics and God, with “my true love” referring to God and “me” being all practicing, baptized Catholics. The rest of the song, Catholic history suggests, can be interpreted as follows: • A Partridge in a Pear Tree: Jesus Christ, the son of God • Two Turtle Doves: the Old and the New Testament. missionaries were attempting to convey the significance of Christmas to native inhabitants. Jean de Brebeuf wrote a hymn, still sung today, in which wise men and shepherds are replaced by “hunter braves”, and swaddling clothes by “a ragged robe of rabbit skin”. The imagery is different; the audience has changed from Jews and Gentiles to “children of the forest free”; yet the key thing is still conveyed — the radiant Boy “brings you beauty, peace, and joy” as we kneel before Him. What words shall we use today to make Christmas meaningful to our culture? Dickens used A Christmas Carol to appeal to (and challenge) class-conscious, ‘scroogey’, industrialized England. What words and actions shall we employ to show love to victims of the tsunami in • Three French Hens: the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity • Four Calling Birds: the four Gospels • Five Golden Rings: the Pentateuch, or the first five books of the Old Testament, all of which dealt with man’s fall from grace • Six Geese A-laying: the six days of creation • Seven Swans A-swimming: the seven Sacraments • Eight Maids A-milking: the eight Beatitudes • Nine Ladies Dancing: the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit • Ten Lords A-Leaping: the Ten Commandments • Eleven Pipers Piping: the 11 faithful apostles (excluding Judas) • Twelve Drummers Drumming: the 12 points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed But, for those who prefer to continue looking at the song as just a quirky holiday hit, enjoy your rousing chorus of “Five Golden Rings.” Asia, hurricanes in America, and AIDS in Africa? What does Jesus’ en-fleshment and deliverance mean to the crystal meth user... the beef farmer struggling with payments? Is our translation being understood? “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it...Though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him...Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name. He gave the right to become children of God...” (Jn 1:5,10,12) Christmas is much more than colourful lights and jam-packed malls. May the Lord help each of us to recognize the true meaning here; to receive Him and, becoming God’s children, interpret the glory and grace of Christ’s coming in a new, active, relevant way to others.
