Bantams gel as team
The Brussels Bantams are
beginning to gel as a team.
The players faced a tough
opponent, when they travelled to
Zurich. It was a hard-hitting, fast-
paced game, throughout three
periods of play. Unfortunately,
Brussels came up short by two as
Zurich won 4-2.
Defensive coverage was supplied
by Thomas Johnston. Scoring for
Brussels were Cody Subject,
unassisted, and Westin McLeod
assisted by Herbie Runstedler and
Cole McLean.
Nov. 19 saw action at home
against Blyth. The hosts came out on
top with a 9-3 victory.
Scoring for Brussels were Evan
Ducharme with a hattrick, Cody
Subject, Westin McLeod with a pair
and Taylor Prior and Ben Gowing
each with one.
Blake Cardiff hustled well in the
comers.
The squad next travelled to
Chesley to participate in their first
tournament action of the season.
Games were decided by one-goal
shootouts.
Discipline and determination
earned Brussels the bronze
medallion.
It was another feather in their hats
as Brussels downed Blyth Dec. 2 by
a score of 5-2. Solid play in net by
Ryan Smith made the difference in
this game.
Scoring were Robert Cronin with
two, Gavin Bowers, Prior and
Brendan Stretton. Assists were
credited to Cronin, Prior, Subject,
Stretton, Gowing, Bowers and
Ducharme.
Cronin played a tremendous
game. Helping out with great hustle
were Cardiff and Brian Burgess.
Brussels got the air let out of their
tires as they took on Zurich. Too
much time in the penalty box, had
an impact on this game.
Scoring were Gowing, Burgess,
Subject and McLeod. It wasn’t
enough, however, as Zurich edged
Brussels 6-4.
The squad headed to Listowel
Saturday, Dec. 10 in fine form.
Listowel came on strong and had
Brussels 3-1 at the bottom of two.
After the break, Brussels took
charge and got three goals in seven
minutes. End-to-end action had the
team smelling victory but they had
to settle for a 4-4 tie.
Scoring were Ducharme with yet
another hattrick, and Burgess.
Assists went to Prior with two,
Stretton, McLean and McLeod.
Coverage on defence by Johnston,
Rundstedler, Prior and Subject
helped secure the tie.
Next it was off to Monkton to
challenge Mitchell in second match
up of the season. Brussels was
controlling from the drop of the
puck with everyone contributing to
mark a tally, Brussels had a good
grip on its opponent and at the end
of two was up by four.
The final score was 9-1. The entire
team contributed to the victory.
Gowing, Stretton and Prior each had
one while Ducharme, McLeod and
Bowers each scored two.
The Blyth Novices enjoyed a
romp over Zurich when they
travelled to an away game, Dec. 10.
With help from his team, Dalton
Carey protected the net valiantly
allowing no goals from the hosts.
It was a pair of Dustins that got the
scoring started for Blyth in the first
period. Dustin Treble set up Dustin
Pennington for goal number one.
Just two minutes later, Pennington
handed off to Josh VanSoest who
skated in to score.
The buzzer was quiet through the
second with neither team able to
bulge the twine.
Then in the third, Curtis Raynard
put Blyth up by three with an assist
from Dylan Walton. Seconds later
Mackenzie Nesbitt and Brendan
Hallahan set up the play for
Pennington’s second of the game. As
the clock ticked down to the final
minute, Walton lit the light for Blyth
with assists going to VanSoest and
Raynard.
The final score was 5-0.
On Dec 15, the squad played an
exhibition game against Goderich
98s and put their visitors in their
place, winning 6-2.
Carey was again solid between the

pipes for the hosts.
It was a big game for Raynard
who scored a hattrick plus one. He
lit the light twice, just seconds apart,
in the first. Van Soest and Autumn
Wightman assisted.
Goderich had also scored two, so
it looked as if the teams would go
into the intermission with the score
tied. However, with 25 seconds
remaining, Ashley Higgins set up
Pennington for the go-ahead goal.
After the break, Blyth continued
to thwart Goderich’s efforts through
the next two periods. Wightman and
Raynard, to complete his hattrick
put the team ahead by three with
second-period goals. Raynard, Van
Soest, Nesbitt and Pennington
earned the assists.
Raynard finished the scoring in
the third with a goal assisted by
Connor Rodger.
Tykes play
Elma Logan
The Tyke I hockey team travelled
to Elma Logan for an early start on
Saturday.
The Little Dogs played hard with
Justin Rodgers scoring the lone goal
for Blyth assisted by Drew
Bromley. Elma Logan ended up
with the win.
In net for Blyth, stopping many
shots, was Jeremy Wilts.
The kids have a break at
Christmas, but will be back after
Christmas with a little more steam.
