Ironmen win 10-1

Wingham Advance Times
The Ironmen took a double-digit
ride over the Goderich Sailors with a
10-1 victory Friday night at home.
Wingham started the game strong
even while killing two penalties,
giving up only two shots and Mitch
Wiebenga working for a
shorthanded chance.
Wingham’s own powerplay drew a
few shots, but it wasn’t until after
that a shot by Derek Beare off the
post was picked up on the other side
by Mitch Allen for the opening goal.
The Sailors got lucky on their only
goal of the game, as a loose puck
escaped the glove of Kurt Edwards
in net, letting Brock Gooyers chip it
in.
Coming down to the last minutes
of the period, another Goderich
penalty gave Wingham the extra
man. Again, the Ironmen waited
until after the powerplay to score, as
Matt MacPhee sent a slapshot right
past goalie Dan Armstrong.
The Ironmen had an instant 3-1
lead 10 seconds later on a goal from
Billy McGrail from the face-off to
end the period on top. Coach Louie
Livingston remains grateful for
signing McGrail in October.
“He gets to the puck so quick, he’s
been a good acquisition,” Livingston
said.
Finding themselves in a scoring
groove, Matt Hill added another for
the Ironmen 30 seconds into the
second period. Wingham goals were
starting to become common-place,
as two minutes later, Andy Cline
helped the Ironmen reach a 5-1 lead.
Even though Goderich was
keeping pace with Wingham’s shots,
Edwards was standing between them
and the net.
Sailor Kyle Stephenson was stood
up by Edwards at the net on a break,
dragging him down along with any
chance of Goderich scoring. With
seconds left on the clock, Joel Riley
was just a hair of adding tallying one
last Ironmen goal, sending a ringer
off the post.
Staying out of the penalty box
wasn’t the answer the Sailors were
looking for, not even able to
capitalize on their own powerplays.
Conversely, the third period saw
the most Ironmen goals of the game
with four, including a shorthanded
Justin Russell marker.
The victory came even though the

The Wingham Juveniles won the
consolation championship in the
Greg Dietz Memorial Juvenile
hockey tournament in Mildmay this
past weekend.
The first game of the series pitted
the team against Walkerton which
they beat 3-0. Adam MacDonald,
Paul Gamiss and Cory MacDonald
were the goalscorers with Xavier
O’Krafka, Greg Tiffin, Cory
MacDonald, Adam MacDonald and
Brendan Blake, (two), chipping in
with assists.
Jamael Jacklin earned the shutout
in the net.
The second game was against
Howick. The game ended in a 2-2 tie
with Howick scoring the equalizer
with 20.8 seconds left in the third
period. C. and A. MacDonald, each
Bantam Gamblers take a loss
On Saturday the Blyth Bantam
Girl Gamblers broomball team
played against Palmerston at the
Clinton arena.
There are two Bantam girl teams
in Blyth this year which means a lot
more first-year players. The girls
have been practising hard and are
just starting to form into a team.
Courtney Bos has taken over in net.
So far, the Gamblers have beaten
the other Blyth team, then tied them,
then in a third game, lost to Seaforth
1-0 in overtime.
The girls were pretty evenly
matched against Palmerston, but
saw few scoring opportunities in the
first half. Palmerston took
advantage of a sloppy Blyth line
change to go ahead in the first half.
Again in the second half, during a
Blyth line change, Palmerston broke
out to go down and score again.
Near the end of the game, Blyth
started to create some scoring
chances with Niki Beyersbergen,
Karly Howard and Aislinn Bremner
getting some shots away, with the
defence of Correena Otten and
Maaike Van Hittersum holding the
ball in, to keep the pressure on.
Finally, in the last minute of play
scored with the former also earning
an assist. Other assists went to Pat
Rushton and Brendan Blake with
two.
On Sunday morning Thedford
provided the opposition. Wingham
trailed 4-1 at one point but chipped
away at the lead and ended up with
a 6-5 victory. Scoring for Wingham
were Gamiss, Blake, A. MacDonald
and C. MacDonald with a hattrick.
Assists were earned by Kris
MacDonald two, O’Krafka, Tate
Stephenson, two, Tiffin and Blake,
two.
The consolation pitted Wingham
against the tournament host
Mildmay. Mildmay had also
defeated Wingham the previous
weekend to earn the right to move
on to International Silver Stick.
another opportunity. The girls were
disappointed with the loss but
satisfied that they were able to break
the Palmerston shutout.
Otten got a pass up to Howard, who
fired it past the Palmerston goalie.
With 35 seconds left, Blyth pulled
their goalie but wasn’t able to create

minutes were a pressure cooker for
the Wingham team. Wingham
withheld the onslaught and sealed
the victory with an empty net goal
by O’Krafka with Adam Skinn
earning the assist.
Wingham plays in Arthur on
Friday night and in Clifford on
