Midget Girls have busy weekend A Mildmay and Blyth Roller PeeWee vie for control of the ball in a contest held in Blyth this past weekend. The host team came up short on this effort. (Vicky Bremnerphoto) Rollers shutout The Blyth Rollers hosted a PeeWee broomball game in the Blyth arena against the Mildmay Hawks on the afternoon on Dec. 3. This was the first time this season that the Hawks and the Rollers played against each other. Mildmay had a strong game making some great passes and successfully stealing the ball away from Blyth. They are very aggressive with their shots on net. First-time goalkeeper, Murray Dale put on the gear to tend the net for the Rollers. He made numerous saves throughout the game. With three minutes left in the game and a tied score the regular play was stopped and it was time for overtime play. The goalies were pulled and the teams met on the ice four on four. Blyth’s Brent Drost won the face-off and made a breakaway to score the kept the scoreboard empty until there were just over two minutes left in the game. Mildmay unfortunately scored another goal one minute later to make the score 2-0 at halftime. In the second period Blyth had more control of the ball, almost scoring on a number of occasions. Dale made several saves, but Mildmay was able to score one more goal. Mildmay wound up for a slapshot on the net and the ball slipped between the goalie’s legs. The final score was 3-0 for Mildmay. winning goal. No other goals were scored by either team before ice time ran out. The final score of the broomball game was 2-1 for the Blyth Kings. Coach Jennifer Miltenberg gave the title Man of the Match to Nickel for playing his position well and getting Blyth on the scoreboard. Brussels Midget Girls had a jam- packed weekend of Silver Stick Competition in Tiverton and Owen Sound, Nov. 25-27. Friday afternoon resulted in a disappointing loss of 6-0 to an aggressive South Huron team. Brussels regrouped later that evening for a very exciting win against Iiderton. This was nicely assisted by Cassandra Uyl. Iiderton then tied the game. After that it was end-to-end action, but with 17 seconds left Iiderton did the fatal move of pulling their goalie with the play at centre ice. Ashley Sholdice picked up the puck and fired it home for the 2-1 victory. All played extremely well. Saturday afternoon it was back to Tiverton to meet the hometown rival. This game was also aggressive with lots of action from both teams. Brussels’ only goal resulted from a pile up in front of the net before Jory Uyl scored. The final score was l-1. Brianne Wheeler made many great saves. Brussels played great hockey, but did not earn enough points to move them on to the Sunday finals.
